[01] H1N1 Flu: Minister of Health Appears Reassuring

Meeting at Maximou

After his meeting with the Prime Minister at Maximos Mansion Minister of Health Dimitris Avramopoulos appeared reassuring. Avramopoulos repeated that all cases are related with people that have returned home after traveling abroad.

We are prepared the minister stressed and noted that it is necessary to speed up the effort to combat the new virus in September a crucial time as the virus tends to spread more easily at that time.

Greece is safe and all cases are being treated directly and effectively, Avramopoulos stressed noting that mild cases will be treated at home while in hotels special rooms will be created for patients that may be present the symptoms of the virus.

National Influenza Pandemic Committee to Convene on Monday

National Influenza Pandemic Committee will convene on Monday. 26 special scientists and competent organizations will participate and will look into the actions our country has to take in order to tackle the virus.

It must be noted that in Greece supplies of antibiotics can cover only 20% of the population. Five pharmaceutical companies are in a research level for the production of the vaccination. The Greek government has already addressed these companies for extra pharmaceutical supply in order to cover 35% of the populations' needs.

[02] N. Korea Launches New Threat

North Korea said on Saturday it would start a uranium enrichment program and weaponize all its plutonium in response to fresh U.N. sanctions, prompting the

United States to demand that Pyongyang stop its "provocative" actions. North Korea also threatened military action if the United States and its allies tried to isolate it.

Unanimity on Sanctions

The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution on Friday which banned all weapons exports from North Korea and most arms imports into the state. It authorized U.N. member states to inspect North Korean sea, air and land cargo, requiring them to seize and destroy goods shipped that violate the sanctions.

Japan plans to impose a total ban on exports to North Korea as part of its new economic sanctions against Pyongyang following last month's nuclear test, news reports said. The move comes after the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously Friday to slap tougher sanctions on North Korea to cripple its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

China targets at balancing the situation. It states that peace is being at stake in the area and calls on the local community to respect the âworries expressed over the security and development interestsâ on N. Korea.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice states that Washington will not be surprised if N. Koreans answers with a third nuclear test.

[03] Iran: Ahmadinejad Wins, Mousavi Supporters Take the Streets

Riot police battled with protesters Saturday as officials announced that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won a landslide election victory. His opponent denounced the results as "treason".The violence broke out as Iran's interior minister said that Ahmadinejad had gained 62.6 percent of the vote.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday told all Iranians to respect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's victory in a presidential election that his closest challenger described as a "dangerous charade".

Trouble erupted on the streets when Ahmadinejad partisans clashed with about 2,000 supporters of moderate former prime minister Mirhossein Mousavi who had been staging a protest against the result of Friday's vote.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered after a statement posted online by pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi urged his supporters to resist a "governance of lie and dictatorship."

Several injuries were reported after police officers hit protesters with batons. Witnesses said some demonstrators appeared to have been arrested. Mousavi, who became the hero of a powerful youth-driven movement, had not made a public address or issued messages since declaring himself the true victor moments after polls closed and accusing authorities of "manipulating" the vote. "I'm warning that I won't surrender to this manipulation," he said.

Many scenarios are expressed per the development that may follow the electoral result. The main question for Western analysts is whether moderate Mousavi can dispute the result.

The opposition party candidate denounced that voting papers were not enough and many citizens were deprived of their right to vote.

Western capitals had hoped a victory for Mousavi could help ease tensions with the West, which is concerned about Tehran's nuclear plans. But Ahmadinejad refuses to proceed to talks with six world powers over Iran's nuclear plans.
