Prime-minister Simitis is expected to announce his initiatives concerning economic policies and better performance of the government till the forthcoming national elections today after the first meeting of the new cabinet which has included two new ministers and 6 new undersecretaries.Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said the Prime-minister will today announce a package of measures for the first stage of reforms in the political system while measures regarding social and economic policies will be announced in September at the opening of the International Thessaloniki Fair. According to reports, among the Prime-minister s initiatives are- the setting up of an operations committee whose task would be to monitor the course of the government s work and the planning of the ruling Pasok party communication policy as well as the demonstration of the government s social character through the so called social cohesion chart. Simitis will chair a meeting of the new Pasok party Executive Office on Wednesday. In the meantime, addressing a meeting of businessmen in Veria, northern Greece, the main opposition N.D leader, Kostas Karamanlis accused the government of inadequacy and repeated his call for early elections. He maintained that the minister cabinet changes imposed by the Prime-minister concerned only his party and his succesor. In response, the government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that the ND leader has once again proved his inability to grasp the model of modern government that the country required, adhering to an old fashioned attitude to politics. At least 8 aftershocks measuring up to 4,9 degrees in magnitude followed sending residents in the town of Canakkale out of their homes in panic after the first tremor.The quake was felt in the islands of north Aegean and Thrace. Its epicenter was located off shore in the Marmara s Sea Saros Gulf seismologists said. (7/7/2003 1:18:00 μμ) [07] Freed Turkish soldiers returned to IraqEleven Turkish soldiers arrested by US forces in Iraq last Friday, on charges of involvement in a plot to kill the interim governor of the oil rich city of Kirkuk, were returned to the north today after the U.S freed them averting an escalation of crisis between the two NATO allies. The Turkish special forces arrived in the northern Iraqui city, Sulamaniyia by helicopter after spending the night in a guest house in Bagdad because of security concerns.(7/7/2003 1:19:00 μμ) [08] Israel sets terms for the release of Palestinian prisonersThe Israeli cabinet set tough terms yesterday for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners a move that could hamper a US backed peace plan recently bolstered by a militant truce and Israeli withdrawals. Reading from a list of terms , approved by a vote to free several hundred inmates, Israeli Prime-minister, Ariel Sharon told his cabinet that there was no way that prisoners with blood on their hands could be released. Earlier Tel- Aviv had given the green light for the release of 400 Palestinian prisoners.Palestinians were disappointed with the decision which fell considerably short of their demands for the release of most of the 6.000 to 8.000 prisoners. (7/7/2003 1:22:00 μμ) [09] Corsica voted no for limited autonomyThe Mediterranean island of Corsica, which lies 160 km south of France s Riviers coast, in a referendum yesterday rejected by a thin majority of 50.98% versus 49.02 % a French government offer of a limited autonomy.French Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, who fought hard for an yes vote said that the government would respect the decision of the people of Corsica. However, French President Jacques Chirac said he regretted the outcome of the referendum saying the French state would continue to help the island and combat any violence. The island has been plagued by separatist violence since mid1970 s and the conservative government in Paris billed the referendum as a historic chance to restore prosperity and peace.
