In addition specific initiatives for the modernisation of the political system, the combat of corruption and vested interests phenomena are expected to be taken as well as measures for a most effective dealing with the citizens problems. Among the prime-minister s intentions is till September to demonstrate the government s social character through the so called social cohesion chart aimed at a real convergence of the economy and the lower income classes. Reliable sources say that the so called Simitis package is being worked out in cooperation with Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis and is expected to be announced at the opening of the Thesaloniki International Fair In the meantime, addressing a meeting of businessmen in Veria, northern Greece, the main opposition N.D leader, Kostas Karamanlis accused the government of inadequacy and repeated his call for early elections. He maintained that the minister cabinet changes imposed by the Prime-minister concerned only his party and his succesor. In response, the government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that the ND leader has once again proved his inability to grasp the model of modern government that the country required, adhered to an old fashioned attitude to politics. Commenting on the government spokesman statement, the ND party spokesman Thodoros Roussopoulos said that nothing has changed in the mentality of the ruling Pasok party. However, Russian Interior Minister maintained a Chechnyan passport was found in one of the two women bombers, linking the attack to Chechnyan separatists who object to Russian President Putin plans to hold presidential elections in Chechnya in October. (6/7/2003 1:38:00 μμ) [06] Explosion at Ancara s petrol station injures 189 peopleA massive explosion at a petrol station in Ancara, Turkey s capital , while a tanker was depositing oil injured 189 people , 7 of them seriously- most of them guests at a wedding in a hall above the petrol station. The injured were transferred to 10 hospitals. Prime-minister Tayip Erdogan visited the scene of the blast and a nearby hospital and said that authorities would prepare regulations barring fuel stations from densely populated areas.(6/7/2003 1:39:00 μμ) [07] Arrest of Turkish soldiers escalates tension in U.S- Turkey relationsThe arrest of 11 Turkish soldiers by US forces in Northern Iraq have threatened to exacerbate tensions between U.S- Turkey, a relationship already strained after Ancara s refusal to allow US troops to stage attacks on Iraq from Turkish soil during the U.S led war .Turkish Prime-minister, Tayip Erdogan who accused NATO ally the US of seizing Turkish special forces said later that some of the soldiers had been released but others remained in U.S custody had been taken to Bagdad The soldiers were accused of planning an attack on the Kurdish governor in the oil rich city of Kirkuk.
