[02] Police does not rule out more arrests of ELA members

Yesterday, Aggelatos Kanas was taken from the General Police Direction of Attica to the Appeals Court. His testimony to Mr. Zervobeakos lasted more than an hour and the Special Examiner asked for information surrounding the activities of ELA and the terrorist organization's actions.

Now, Aggelatos Kannas and Christos Tsigaridas, another member of the terrorist organisation ELA have been sent to the Corydallos Penitentriary..

From his side, during his testimony, Christos Tsigaridas reiterated that he assumes the political responsibility for his participation in the terrorist organisation ELA up to 1991, while the other three accused rejected their charges. Specifically, Costas Agapiou and Irene Athanasaki described their indictment invalid.

Finally, the police chief expressed his satisfaction over successes of the police for the uprooting of terrorism in Greece, not ruling out more arrests of ELA members.

[03] PM's spokesman resigns

In his letter of resignation, he reminds his decision to be a candidate in the B' electoral district of Piraeus in the next parliamentary elections, while he also mentions that an effort is being made aimed at defaming the political work he is doing in Piraeus area.

From his side, New Democracy party spokesman stated that Prime Minister Costas Simitis' government was passing way and in reply the Press Minister stated that taking that logic under consideration, he understood why the New Democracy party would loose the next elections.

[04] Greece continues its efforts to prevent war against Iraq

At the same time, Russia, China, Germany and France insist that the Iraqi issue should be resolved peacefully. The French President Jacques Chiraq had telephone contacts with leaders of the Security Council country members to whom he stressed that war could be averted.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the BBC, British Prime Minister Tony Blair appeared certain that if Iraq was proved to be violating the United Nations resolutions, then no country would oppose to a military intervention.

At the same time, Iraq rejected American Secretary of State Colin Powell's evidence according to which Bagdad possesses weapons of mass destruction and that it has relations with the al-Quaeda n etwork.

On a relative development, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who is continuing the Greek EU Presidency's peaceful initiative, is in Cairo, where he is having discussions with his Egyptian counterpart and Secretary General of the Arab Union Amr Musa. Mr Musa is the person who met with the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and convinced him to accept the United Nations inspectors in his country.

[05] Annan presses for a solution of the Cyprus issue by February 28

Meanwhile, Mr Alvaro De Soto will be in New York next week. The Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers will visit New York at that time.

Mr Annan's representative Fred Ekhart described that period as very important.

Besides, according to a diplomatic source, Mr Annan will make an effort so that a solution of the Cyprus issue is reached before February 28 despite Ankara's negative stance.

Finally, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stated that the Greek government is ready to proceed to discussions with Turkey on the issue of guarantees and security.
