[02] UN inspectors should be given more time say China, France and Russia

There has been a mixed response to US Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation to the UN Security Council spelling out what he says is clear evidence Iraq is failing to disarm.

The UK's foreign secretary gave strong backing to the Washington line, but the other three key Council members - China, France and Russia, all said the inspectors should be given more time.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said the international community had sent a clear message to Iraq, and it should listen carefully.

But Baghdad rejected Mr Powell's allegations, saying the goal was to sell the idea of war against Iraq, and said it would issue a detailed response later on Thursday.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the CNN, Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who attended the United Nations Security Council meeting, said that he still hoped that diplomacy would finally prevail.

After his meeting with his American counterpart Colin Powell and the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, the Greek Foreign Minister reiterated that the EU demands from Iraq to fully comply with the Security Council resolution 1441.

On a relative development, British Foreign Secretary Jack Sraw stated that 14 February would be a critical date for Iraq, since the UN inspectors would present its new report on Iraq's arsenal on that date.

At the same time, the American President's council Condoleza Rice warned that the Iraqi President Saddam Husein was running out of time.

In an effort to prove that Iraq possesses arms of mass destruction, the head of the State Department presented telephone conversations that had been tapped, satellite images and other evidence of the American secret services. Additionally, Mr Powell maintained that a group of Islamists related to the Al Quaeda network is in Bagdad.

From its side, Iraq replied that all the evidence was fabricated so as to undermine the United Nations inspections and so as to justify a war against it.

At the same time, in joint letter, 10 European countries have expressed their support to the United States. These countries are Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Rumania, Bulgaria, FYROM, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia and Slovakia.

Finally, the United States is increasing its forces in wider area of the Persian Gulf by sending F-117A jet fighters and the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt

[03] Cyprus issue must be resolved by February 28 insists Annan

Following his meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan at the United Nations headquarters yesterday, Foreign Minister George Papandreou stated that Mr Annan insists that the Cyprus issue should be resolved by February 28.

According to diplomatic sources at the United Nations headquarters, Mr Annan will send a letter to the Greek and Turkish Prime Ministers asking them to begin negotiations for the solution of the safety issue in Cyprus, parallel to the efforts being made for an overall solution of the problem.
