[02] Prime-minister Simitis rules out early elections

Addressing the ruling Pasok party Executive Office yesterday, Prime-minister Simitis said that general elections will be held as scheduled at the end of the government s 4-year term in May 2004, stressing that the country which looks like a huge construction site now would have a new view by then. He also attacked the main opposition ND party noting that it was trying to overcome its lack of positions by scandalmongering.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, Mr. Simitis stressed the importance of recent developments underlining that the UN might come up with new ideas prior to the February 28 deadline set for the resolution of Cyprus political problem.

He described next month as crucial for developments in the Iraqui crisis however, stressing that the common position adopted by the EU General Affairs Council was a result of hard work and a significant achievement by Greece s EU rotating presidency.
