[03] EU could contribute to a peaceful resolution of the Iraqui crisis

Hours before UN arms inspectors deliver a crucial report to the UN Security Council , the US Secretary of State , Collin Powel made clear the US had the right to go to war alone if it could not muster support among a deeply divided international community, adding though that The U.S would extend time for inspectors to conclude their work.

In an interview with a British television channel, Iraqui vice-president Tariq Aziz denied that Iraq had any involvement with the Al Qaeda network and terrorism in achieving its goals He also said that the Iraqui government had equipped its troops with protective suits against chemical and biological attack for use if such weapons were employed by the US and its allies.

Following his talks with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held in Davos Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou expressed the conviction that Europe would contribute to a peaceful solution of the Iraqui crisis.

''Europe can contribute to yet another effort for a peaceful way out on condition that Saddam Hussein fully cooperates with the UN, Papandreou told reporters .

Papandreou and Powell had an extensive exchange of views on developments regarding Iraq, possible initiatives and existing concern.

He also had talks on relations between the EU and Turkey with Tayyip Erdogan, leader of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, and Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul.

The Turkish leaders conveyed Ankara s concern over the situation that could follow a possible war, developments which may occur in the Arab world, as well as the high concern of Iraq s neighbours. The issue of Cyprus was also discussed.

Other meetings Papandreou had here were with King Abdallah of Jordan, the Polish president, Switzerland's prime minsier and the Archbishop of Albania Anastasios.

Papandreou departed from Davos for Brussels where the European Union General Affairs Council convenes today to examine the crucial issue of Iraq.
