  • [01] Weather forecast

    Rain and storms are expected throughout the country on Monday, with snowfall on high ground in northern Greece. The weather is expected to improve from the afternoon, initially in the west and then in the rest of the country. Winds east-southeasterly, strong to very strong in the north; south-southeasterly, strong to very strong, in the rest of the country, rising to gale force over the Aegean. Temperatures will range from 8 to 13 C in the north and 11-16 C in the rest of the country.

    Athens will be cloudy with rain and storms with temperatures ranging from 12-16 C. The same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures of 10-14 C.

    [02] Western Greece hit by earthquake

    An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Vartholomio and other areas of the Ilia Prefecture in Western Greece at 07:00 today. The epicentre is located in the sea are between the island of Zakynthos and Kyllini.

    Most damages have been recorded at Vartholomio, which is only 12 kilometres away from the epicentre of the quake, while a part of Saint Eleousa monastery has collapsed. At the same time, a group of the special forces EMAK is expected to arrive in Vartholomio mainly for psychological reasons. More damages were also reported in the wider area between Killini and Vartholomio. At the same time, schools will remain closed in Zakynthos and the prefecture of Ilia for precautionary reasons.

    In an interview with NET, seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos stated that although he is not sure whether this is the main quake, strong aftershocks may follow that can cause bigger damages to buildings that have sustained damages.

    Finally, in an interview with our station, seismologist George Stavrakakis appeared reassuring regarding the seismic activity in the sea area, adding that it is developing normally.

    [03] On the alert for bad weather conditions

    The state mechanism is on the alert to deal with the adverse weather conditions expected to prevail all over Greece. At the same time, due to the gale force winds blowing in the Aegean Seam all departure of ships heading to South-eastern Aegean islands and Ikarion islands have been banned.

    [04] The Cyprus issue in the centre of developments

    The National Council in Cyprus is meeting today to examine points of the Annan plan that can be negotiated on. The President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides is expected to present United Nations special envoy Alvaro De Soto, who is visiting Cyprus today, with his answer on the plan.

    At the same time, the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash appears ready to negotiate on Mr Annan's plan, provided the negative points of the plan are left out.

    Meanwhile, the International Central Democratic parties that met in Corfu agreed that Cyprus should be acceded to the European Union irrelevant of the solution of the Cyprus issue. Moreover, the President of the Commission Romano Prodi stated that Cyprus should be acceded to the European Union anyway.

    On a relative development, in an interview with NET, the former Turkish President Suleiman Demirel stated that he is in favour of negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus issue. He also maintained that the solution of the Cyprus problem would influence Greek-Turkish relations positively, stressing at the same time that even if a solution was not reached by 12 December, then both sides will have to continue discussions.
