    Cloud is forecast in all parts of the country today, with showers in the west, centre and south. Winds northerly, moderate to very strong, turning gale force in the northern Aegean. Cloud and drizzle in Athens, with temperatures between 6C and 13C. Same in Thessaloniki with temperatures from 0C to 9C. Ferry routes from Piraeus and Rafina resumed normal operations when high winds abated yesterday, after having been suspended due to bad weather for nearly four days.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in Athens today for a three-day official visit, following an invitation by his Greek counterpart Kostis Stephanopoulos. Police authorities in Athens have announced that extra traffic measures would be implemented during the Russian leaders visit to Greece.

    Mr. Putin will meet with Prime Minister Costas Simitis and sign bilateral agreements on the sectors on energy, air transport, and justice.

    In published press statements yesterday, President Putin was quoted saying he considers Greece a bridge for Russia' s approach to the European Union.

    [05] Good will gesture, Cyprus

    [06] President participation at dinner hosted by Raulf Dekrash

    Cyprus President, Glafkos Klerides participation at the dinner hosted by Raulf Dektash in honour of UN special envoy to Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto wasdescribed as a good will gesture for the finding of a viable solution to the Cyprus issue by the Cyprus government.

    Mr. de Sotto stressed that this time both sides have committed themselves to hold substantial talks.

    However, Cyprus government spokesman clarified that President Klerides participation at the dinner did not mean indirect recognition of the occupation regime in Northern Cyprus.

    Greek Prime-minister Kostas Simitis expressed reserved optimism on the recent developments and stressed that strong efforts and cautiousness would bring positive results in the Cyprus issue. Washington appeared satisfied at the developments

    [07] Stricter measures to be adopted to deal with illegal immigration

    Following a meeting of the ministerial committee to discuss the issue of illegal immigration, Prime-minister Simitis announced the government's decisions that include reforms of the existing legislation on asylum seekers, the granting of nationality, border protection and stricter measures for slave traders.

    [08] Need for structural changes in the Greek economy to take advantage of the introduction of the euro currency

    Following his meeting with the Governor of the European Central Bank, Vim Douzemberg in Frankfurt, the President of the main opposition ND part, Kostas Karamanlis stressed the need for structural changes in the Greek economy to take advantage of the possibilities with the introduction of the euro curency.

    [09] Better conditions in the armed forces and reduction of the military service

    Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou announced a program for the improvement of living conditions for those serving in the armed forces. He also repeated his firm position for reduction of the military service to 12 months by the year 2003.

    [10] Creation of the Euro-army within the framework of the Nice summit decisions

    Asked to comment on the U.S and British text concerning the Euro-army, Greek government spokesman, Hristos Protoppapas said that the Euro-army can be a positive development and repeated the Greek governments position that its creation should be within the framework of the Nice summit decisions. Mr.protoppapas aslo stated that Greece will defend its national interests in the best possible way.

    [11] Meeting of Prime-minister Simitis with Environment Minister Vaso Papandreou

    The course of Olympic Games projects and the further financing of the National Registry by the 3rd Community Support framework was the focus of talks during yesterday' s meeting between the Prime-minister Simitis and Environment and Public Works Minister Vaso Pa pandreou in view of her visit to Brussels next week.

    [12] Sale of Olympic Airways Company proceeding

    Transport Minister Hristos Verelis has called opostion parties to express any objections as procedures for the sale of the Olympic Airways Company are proceeding. Mr. Verelis also announced that the EU will subsidise the air-transport to border islands a s from December 28.

    The Athens bourse finished higher yesterday, fuelled by a short burst of buying in selected blue chips that took prices higher after a small rise at the start of trade. The general share index gained 0.76 percent to end at 2,703.08 points. Turnover was 152.38 million euros.

    [14] Greek actress Irene Pappas awarded "Woman of Europe" title

    Renowned Greek actress Irene Papas was awarded on Wednesday the "Woman of Europe" title, during elections held by the International Association for the promotion of the rights of women in Europe.

    Papas was elected for her contribution in promoting European civilization throughout her artistic career and her initiatives for communication and cooperation of European artists and the promotion of the European cultural heritage.

    [15] Ecumenic Patriarch visits Greece

    Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos will tomorrow visit Mount Athos .On Saturday, Mr.Vartholomeos will visit Thessaloniki where he will declare open the conference of the Council of Hellenes Abroad.

    [16] Greek EU Commissioner on an official visit to Cyprus

    Greek EU commissioner, responsible on employment and social affairs isues, Anna Diamantopoulou, will pay a two-day official visit to Cyprus today and tomorrow.
