  • [01] 8 March 1998: "A flower for the women of Kabul" - An international campaign for the women of Afghanistan

Today, in Brussels, a panel of prominent women, representing a core group of 50 internationally known women - Ministers, Nobel Prize Winners, as well as politicians and intellectuals, some from the Muslim world - launched an Appeal for the women of Afghanistan. The panel presented this initiative as part of a world wide campaign originally promoted by the European Parliament, and called on the international community to show its support for Afghan women, who have been stripped of rights that women around the world take for granted. The Appeal calls on all Member governments of the United Nations, as well as on all international organisations, to do whatever is in their power to help restore the basic human rights of women in Afghanistan. It is now open to the signature of women world wide. The European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), which is committed to raising public awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, is supporting the campaign.
