[01] UK promises "fresh start" with EU
BRUSSELS - British Prime Minister Tony Blair's "new dawn" broke over Brussels
on Monday with his newly elected Labour government pledging to work with,
rather than fight its European Union partners.

LONDON - Many British business leaders will have winced on Monday at news that
the new minister for Europe, Doug Henderson, is flying to Brussels to start
the process of joining the European Union Social Chapter immediately.

BRUSSELS - Britain's new Labour government's electoral pledge to cut VAT on
fuel may meet European Commission opposition, a Commission spokeswoman said on
Monday.

ATHENS - Commissioner for Energy Christos Papoutsis disclosed plans on Monday
to install half a million solar power units in Europe by 2010.

BRUSSELS - A European Union tax on soft wheat exports is due to be formally
approved and enter into force on Wednesday, a European Commission official
said.

BRUSSELS - European Union pigmeat export refunds were suspended at zero from
Tuesday in a bid to calm rising prices, a European Commission agriculture
spokesman said.
[07] Five farm green rates to devalue
BRUSSELS - The green rates of the German mark, Dutch guilder, Belgian franc,
Austrian schilling and Swedish crown will be devalued on Tuesday, the European
Commission said.
[08] Mad cow/gelatine measures delayed
BRUSSELS - The European Commission has postponed until next week a proposal
for further measures, including a ban on exports of British gelatine, to
combat mad cow disease, Commission officials said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to propose rules on Wednesday
that would give it clear and undisputable jurisdiction over alliances between
EU and non-EU airlines.
[10] Boeing/McDonnell merger comments
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is seeking comments on the proposed merger
between Boeing Co and McDonnell Douglas Corp, currently being investigated
under EU rules banning creation or strengthening of dominant positions.
[11] Carlsberg confident on EU probe
COPENHAGEN - Danish brewer Carlsberg said on Monday that it believed a
European Commission examination of its planned Nordic alliance with Coca Cola
would rule in favour of the production and distribution deal.

STRASBOURG, France - Ukraine on Monday signed a European accord abolishing the
death penalty, but the move must still be ratified by its parliament, the
Council of Europe said.
