[01] EU snubs Turkish membership hopes
BRUSSELS - Turkey was given the bluntest notice to date on Tuesday that it
would be locked out of the European Union as leading centrist EU politicians
spoke out firmly against Turkish EU membership.

BRUSSELS - Western Europe's information and communications technologies market
is expected to grow by 7.1 percent in 1997, continuing an upturn that began in
1993, a study published by an industry group on Tuesday showed.

SOFIA - The European Union mission is expected to visit Bulgaria March 17-18
and is prepared to discuss financial help even before a funding deal with the
International Monetary Fund is in place, an EU official said on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS - European Union centrist leaders insisted on Tuesday that economic
and monetary union was still on track and that delaying the single currency
was highly undesirable.

hoped for legally binding commitments from member states on completing the
single market.

BRUSSELS - European Union single market and taxation chief Mario Monti
defended on Tuesday controversial plans to raise minimum taxes on motor and
heating fuels and extend it to electricity and natural gas.

ROME - Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini said on Tuesday the European
Union will discuss the Albanian crisis on Thursday, with Dutch Foreign
Minister Hans Van Mierlo due to visit the Balkan state on Friday.

BRUSSELS - Faced with the nightmare prospect of major unrest in the Balkans,
European states struggled on Tuesday to find a common stand over how to react
to worsening events in Albania.

MINSK - Hardline Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko urged NATO on Tuesday
to conclude a separate treaty with his country and said a new "European order"
should be established without the United State

after Britain's elections to see what a new government in London may be
willing to accept in a new EU treaty, EU officials said on Tuesday.
