BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Friday played down a press report saying
the EU was set to ban Anglo American of South Africa Corp from keeping a 28-
percent stake in Lonrho Plc, arguing it was too early to make any conclusions.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will reopen a state aid probe into Groupe
des Assurances Nationales following the French government's announcement of a
rescue package of up to 20 billion french francs for the ailing insurer.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared British
Airways Plc's proposed acquisition of insolvent French airline Air Liberte.

BRUSSELS - A veal early marketing premium must stay for now despite French
claims that it is unfair, the European Commission said on Friday.

of beef was accepted into - intervention by the European Union's beef
management committee on Friday, a Commission official said.

BRUSSELS - EU Justice Commissioner Anita Gradin, who has led the bloc's fight
against illegal trafficking of women for sex, rejected criticism on Friday
that her approach was too narrow because it did not call for legalising
prostitution.

NICOSIA - The European Union appealed on Friday to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf
Denktash to bring his community out of "isolation" and move towards solving
the protracted Cyprus dispute splitting the island for decades.
[08] Euro-Med meeting in Malta
VALLETTA - Less than six months after taking power, Malta's new Labour
government, which has frozen plans to take the island into the European Union,
is preparing to host one of the biggest gatherings this year of European and
Mediterranean foreign ministers.
[09] Solana to visit Moscow in March
BRUSSELS - NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana will visit Moscow on March 8
and 9 for a new round of talks on a new deal with Russia ahead of the
alliance's planned eastwards enlargement, alliance officials said on Friday.
[10] Yeltsin discusses NATO
MOSCOW - President Boris Yeltsin met his foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov on
Sunday to discuss Moscow's relations with NATO and the Russian leader's
planned summit later this month with U.S. President Bill Clinton.
