[01] Council agrees voice telephone
BRUSSELS - The Telecommunications Council agreed on Thursday a cornerstone of
its plan for liberalising telecoms markets by January 1, 1998 -- new rules to
cover basic voice telephone service.
[02] EU may restrict plant relocations
BRUSSELS - Spurred by Renault's controversial decision to close down a car
plant in Belgium, the European Commission may well try to regulate relocations
if it suspects firms want to use subsidies to switch operations from high to
low-labour cost regions within the EU.
[03] MEPs slam Renault "arrogance"
BRUSSELS - Socialist members of the European Parliament on Thursday accused
French car maker Renault of "arrogance and disdain" in its handling of the
closure of a Belgian assembly plant.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, preparing for the single currency,
releases for the first time on Friday comparable inflation data designed to
help to determine which countries qualify for economic and monetary unio.

BRUSSELS - Dutch Foreign Minister Hans Van Mierlo will urge all parties in
Albania to show maximum restraint and respect human rights during a Friday
visit to the tiny Balkan state, diplomats said.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament, reacting to the successful cloning of a
sheep at Scotland's Roslin Institute, is expected next week to call for a ban
on the cloning of humans and a ban or moratorium on the cloning of animals.

BRUSSELS - Women in the European Union earn on average a fifth less than male
counterparts, the European Commission said on Thursday.
