    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers formally agreed on Monday 500 million Ecus in aid to beef farmers who have lost income due to a drop in sales caused by a public health scare over mad cow disease, EU officials said.

    [02] UK gelatine ban should stay

    BRUSSELS - European Union scientists said on Monday that more research was needed into the transmission of mad cow disease to humans and that meanwhile a ban on British beef by-products, such as gelatine, should remain.

    BRUSSELS - The Farm Council heard a report from Britain on Monday on its progress in fighting mad cow disease but there was no sign of any easing of the worldwide ban on British beef.
