[01] NATO/Bosnia
BRUSSELS - NATO, bolstered by Washington's decision to stay on in Bosnia, is
set to call on Monday for an international force of about 30,000 troops to
remain in the troubled country to help cement a fragile peace.
[02] EP/education in East Europe
STRASBOURG - The second phase of a scheme to improve higher education in the
countries of central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union won the
support of the European Parliament on Friday.
[03] Commission on Kesko/Tuko deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to rule next Wednesday against
the merger between Finnish wholesaler and retailer Kesko and its rival Tuko,
European Union sources said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission warned Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain
and Portugal on Friday it would take them to court unless they applied the
EU's 1995 legislation on genetically modified organisms.
[05] EU/Ireland/telecoms opening
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to grant soon an Irish request
to delay the full liberalisation of its telecommunications market until
January 1, 2000, two years later than most of its European Union partners.
[06] EU/Spain telecoms liberalisation
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to clear the participation of
Telefonica de Espana in the Unisource telecommunications deal in May 1997
following Spain's agreement to liberalise its telecoms market fully by
November 30, 1998, Commission sources said.

DUBLIN - European Union president Ireland said on Friday it was deeply
concerned by the aggression committed against Aung San Suu Kyi and other
leaders of Burma's National League for Democracy on November 9.
[08] Kinnock on Alpine tour
BRUSSELS - European Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock sets out on a four-day
lobbying tour on Monday, visiting Austria, Italy and France in an effort to
ease trans-alpine road transport tension, a Commission official said.

ROME - World leaders unanimously decried hunger last week but a five-day U.N.
food summit ended on Sunday as it began -- deeply divided over whether free
trade is the best way to offer hope to more than 800 million under-nourished).

BEIJING - China has pledged support for phased acceptance of obligations in
order to join the World Trade Organisation, Trade Commissioner Sir Leon
Brittan said on Friday.

PRAGUE - Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus has hailed his party's strong
showing in Senate elections as a public yearning for economic reform with
stability. But the truth is no party really won and democracy was the big
loser.

BELGRADE - Serbia held a run-off election on Sunday for municipal councils,
two weeks after President Slobodan Milosevic's leftist coalition scored a
resounding victory in national polls.

BRUSSELS - EU agricultural ministers meeting begins at 1400 GMT (first of two
days); discussions focus on the state of beef sector and support system for
arable crops.
OSTEND, Belgium - The Belgian Presidency of the WEU council of ministers
begins at 1000 GMT (first of two days); discussions focus on the creation of
the organisation of the WEU armament.
BRUSSELS - European Commission President Santer and Commissioners van den
Broek, Pinheiro and de Silguy meet World Bank Chairman James Wolfensohn.
