[01] No discussions on lira ERM entry
BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee did not discuss the
possible entry of the Italian lira into the Exchange Rate Mechanism, EU
monetary sources said on Tuesday.
[02] No agreement on EMU budget pact
BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee made little progress on
Tuesday towards agreement on a budget stability pact for countries joining a
single currency.
[03] Lamfalussy warns on EMU entry
FRANKFURT - European Monetary Institute president Alexandre Lamfalussy warned
on Tuesday that nations hoping to participate in monetary union should not
expect too much leeway in meeting tough membership criteria.

BRUSSELS - European Union budget ministers agreed on Tuesday a 1997 central
budget for the 15-nation bloc which achieves zero growth, an unprecedented
attempt at spending restraint.

OSTEND, Belgium - The Western European Union agreed on Tuesday to set up a
joint arms and development body to help avoid unnecessary duplication in
producing weapons systems for NATO's European members.
[06] Greek/Turkish row threatens WEU
OSTEND - Greek and Turkish rivalry spilled over into the Western European
Union on Tuesday, threatening to disrupt the European defence group's plans
for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid efforts.
[07] EU merger dept/silicon carbide deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission's competition directorate has proposed
blocking the merger of the silicon carbide operations of Saint-Gobain, Wacker-
Chemie and Dutch investment firm NOM, but the final decision is still in
doubt, EU officials said on Tuesday.
[08] EU/Japanese deregulation
BRUSSELS - The European Union has revised its list of demands made to the
Japanese government for inclusion in Tokyo's ongoing deregulation programme,
adding a request for various administrative reforms to a long list.
[09] EU/Asian cotton cloth
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had imposed provisional
anti-dumping penalties averaging 20 percent on grey cotton fabric from India,
China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt.
[10] EU/US biotech maize exports
BRUSSELS - Exporters shipping U.S. gene modified maize to the European Union
do so at their own risk, a European Commission spokesman said on Tuesday.
[11] Denmark firm on Third Pillar
BRUSSELS - Denmark would not be able to agree to a transfer of policy areas
from the European Union's third pillar to its first pillar, the country's
chief negotiator at the IGC said on Tuesday.
[12] Zaire rebel authority
KINSHASA - European Union envoy Aldo Ajello said on Monday Europe could not
recognise the authority of Rwandan-backed Zairean rebels who have taken over a
strip along the eastern frontier.
