BRUSSELS - German insistence on a tough budget stability pact among countries
forming a common currency has led European Union officials to scale back their
predictions for a full agreement this year.

MADRID - Madrid warned its European partners on Monday that if they overlook
French shortcomings to let Paris join a single currency, it will expect the
same treatment.

BRUSSELS - European states lurched towards some form of humanitarian

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will assess the merger between British
Telecommunications Plc and MCI of the United States, the spokesman for
European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had approved an operation
under which Schweizer Rueckversicherungs-Gesellschaft will acquire sole
control of Mercantile and General Reinsurance Co from Britain's Prudential
Group.

BRUSSELS - Spanish telecoms group Telefonica de Espana is set to pull out of
its cable television venture with pay TV giant Sogecable SA due to European
Commission opposition, European Union sources said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday that it was starting a
preliminary inquiry into a proposed joint venture between ESPN Inc, a
subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, and Star Television Ltd, which belongs
to The News Corporation Ltd.

GENEVA - The chief executive of American Airlines said on Monday he expected
regulatory approval for its tie-up with British Airways PLC would be completed
by the end of March next year.

policy and there must be a new balance in the 21st century, EU Farm
Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Monday.
