[01] Cyprus condemns Turkish Cypriot journalists' imprisonment
Cyprus, through its Charge d' Affairs to the United Nations Mr George
Kasoulides, has condemned the imprisonment of two Turkish Cypriot
journalists, after an illegal court in the Turkish occupied part passed a
six month "jail sentence" against the editor in chief of the main
opposition daily paper "Afrika" Mr Sener Levent and one of his reporters Mr
Memduh Ener.
Mr Kasoulides has sent a letter to Human Rights Watch, Overseas Press Club,
Committee to Protect Journalists, Freedom House and Amnesty International,
informing them of "further unacceptable acts committed by the illegal
regime against the Turkish Cypriot journalists" and asked for the
organizations' support and action.
Mr Kasoulides also attached to the letter a press release issued by the
Cyprus Union of Journalists, which also condemned the new provocative
acts.
[02] Inauguration of Cypriot exhibition in Mexico
The Charge d' Affairs of Cyprus to Mexico Mr Andonis Mandritis, on 7 August
2002, opened an exhibition in the city of Venustiano Carranza under the
title "Cyprus 9000 years of civilization".
Inaugurating the exhibition, which was organized by the Cyprus Press Office,
Mr Mandritis thanked the local authorities of the Venustiano Carranza
Municipality and referred to Cyprus' rich history, the Turkish invasion and
occupation as well as the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage in the
occupied areas.
The exhibition, which was visited by officials of the Venustiano Carranza
Municipality, representatives of local governments, Mexican and foreign
diplomats, as well as a great number of people, will remain open until
Friday, 16 August 2002.
