[01] House President: The key to the solution lies in the Turkish

The President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias
stressed that there cannot be a just and viable solution to the Cyprus
problem, outside the framework of the United Nations Resolutions, the High
Level Agreements and the principles of international law.
Delivering a speech yesterday at the memorial service for the hero Nikos
Karasamanis, who was killed during the Turkish invasion in 1974, he urged
the international community to exert its influence on the Turkish side so
as to cooperate and be more constructive regarding the Cyprus problem with
a view to finding a just and viable solution.
Mr Christofias also called upon the UN Security Council and the Secretary-
General to abandon their stance of equal distance between the victimiser
and the victim. It is mandatory for them to clarify that they can no longer
tolerate the delaying tactics on the part of the Turkish side or the
disregard of the UN Resolutions on Cyprus.
It is clear that the key to the solution lies in the Turkish side. This is
not to say that the role of our side would come to an end in the efforts to
find a solution, Mr Christofias said, and went further to add: "We must
continue to demonstrate our readiness to cooperate with the United Nations
for finding an honourable compromise with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots.
It is necessary that we continue to insist on the respect of the basic
principles, without which there cannot be a just and viable solution on the
basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation which would provide for a single
state in Cyprus, with one sovereignty, one international personality and
one citizenship and would ensure the human rights and freedoms of the whole
of our people."
[02] Reduced income from tourism
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism announces that according to
statistical information from the Statistical Service, during the period of
January to July 2002 the income from tourism reached £445.474.355, compared
to £480.126.583 during the corresponding period last year, recording a
decrease of 7,22%. Arrivals of tourists reached 1.017.366, compared to
1.170.323 in the corresponding period last year, recording a decrease of 13,
7%.
The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Nikos A. Rolandis said
that the situation was closely monitored by the Ministry, as well as by the
CTO and that all the advertising programmes were being implemented.
