[01] Rate of growth increases
The rate of growth of the Cypriot economy is expected to exceed 2% for 2002,
and it will settle between 2,5-3%, an official press release of the
Ministry of Finance said yesterday.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)'s projection of Monday 12 August 2002,
referring to a rate of growth of the Cyprus economy of less than 2%, is not
in accordance with the statistic figures and evaluations provided by the
Ministry of Finance and the Planning Bureau.
The reduced rate of growth that occurred during the first half of the year,
mainly because of the reduction of tourism, was not accompanied by a
substantial increase in the rate of unemployment.
The projection of the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Bureau, which
indicate a rate of economic growth of 2,5-3%, will be conveyed, within the
next few days to the European Commission, within the framework of the
submission of the revised Pre-accession Economic Programme for 2001-
2005.
