[01] Israeli President hails Cyprus' European prospect

The President of Israel Mr. Ezer Weizman expressed satisfaction last night at Cyprus' European prospect adding that "we will be happy if Europe becomes closer to Israel by a forty minute flight".

Speaking at a banquet given in his honour, Mr. Weizman stressed that he is "encouraged by the progress achieved in recent years in the bilateral relations of Israel and Cyprus. Both countries have much to give and learn from each other" he said. The Israeli President also noted his country's wish to "expand co-operation with Cyprus in fields like, high - tech, telecommunications and health."

Addressing his guest at the banquet, the President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides expressed the belief that Cyprus' entry to the European Union "at the threshold of the 21st century will add to our role with regard to peace, security and stability in this volatile area" and "will establish an important link between Europe and the Middle East".

Underlining the need for the firm consolidation of peace in the Middle East, President Clerides said that "the road to peace is not easy at all" but expressed certainty that "there should be no return from the road marked by both Israelis and Palestinians towards a comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

Moreover President Clerides referring to the friendly bonds between the two countries, indicated that "Israel's military co-operation with Turkey constitutes a source of concern for our own security" and expressed hope that those activities will not "evolve into developments detrimental to our good relationship."

Clarifying his country's position on the matter, Mr. Weizman pointed out that "our relations with Ankara are not directed against you", adding that the "last thing we would wish to do is to harm you."

Earlier in the day, the Israeli President stated after talks with President Clerides, that the Israel - Turkey military agreement concerns no third party least of all Cyprus.
