[01] Israeli President expresses hope for a final settlement on Cyprus

The President of the State of Israel Mr. Ezer Weizman expressed hope that a final settlement will soon be reached on Cyprus.

Speaking at Larnaca airport today, soon after his arrival for a three-day state visit, Mr. Weizman referred to the long-standing relations between Israel and Cyprus, stressing that they date back to hundreds of thousands of years.

"Our countries and people have much in common. Both Israel and Cyprus are countries suffering from conflicts and aiming for peace", he said.

He added that "recently a very important step was taken between Israel and the Palestinians towards a final settlement" and expressed the hope that the same will soon apply to Cyprus.

Welcoming his Israeli counterpart at the airport, the President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides underlined that Mr. Weizman's arrival "marks the beginning of a new bright chapter" in relations between the two countries.

Mr Clerides expressed certainty that in their endeavour to strengthen bilateral relations, Cyprus and Israel "promote and reinforce the cause of peace, security and stability in this volatile region".

Mr. Weizman, who is accompanied by a 12-member delegation, will hold private talks with President Clerides at noon and will be received by Archbishop Chrysostomos later in the day.

In the evening the President of the Republic will host a state banquet in honour of Mr. Weizman.

[02] Foreign Minister leaves for European capitals

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides left for Athens yesterday, the first in a series of visits to European capitals in the light of the launch of the substantive Cyprus - EU accession negotiations to start on November 10.

In Athens Mr. Kassoulides held talks with his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos whom he briefed on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem as well as on Cyprus' accession course.

Today Mr. Kassoulides will fly to Madrid for a two day official visit at the invitation of his Spanish counterpart Abel Matutes. The two Ministers' meeting will focus on the islands' EU accession course, the Cyprus problem and other issues of mutual interest.

On November 3rd, the Cypriot Minister will go to London to meet British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

Mr. Kassoulides will fly to Brussels on November 8 to represent Cyprus at the launching of the Cyprus/EU substantive accession negotiations on November 10.

[03] Cyprus, Egypt, Israel to conduct joint exercise against pollution

A joint exercise between Cyprus, Egypt, Israel aimed at fighting pollution at Larnaca Bay begins today and will be concluded on Thursday, November 5.

The joint exercise will be conducted within the framework of a Convention signed by Cyprus, Egypt and Israel providing for co-operation in fighting big pollution accidents in the Mediterranean.

The Cyprus' Fisheries Department as well as other government services and private organisations will be the main co-ordinators of the exercise. Rescue teams from Egypt and Israel will be also participating in the exercise.

[04] Excavations at Kalavasos - Ayios Dhimitrios completed

The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Communications and Works, announces the completion of the 1998 excavations season at the large late Bronze Age site of Kalavasos - Ayios Dhimitrios. The works were directed by Ian Todd and Alison South of the Vassilikos Valley Project. This year work continued in the north-east Area of the town where a large palatial ashlar building (Building X) was previously excavated.

A tomb (Tomb 21) immediately to the south of Building X was excavated this year. It had been looted or cleaned out during the Late Bronze Age, but revealed some interesting material. The findings include many fine Cypriot vessels (large Base Ring I jugs, White Slip II bowl, Monochrome, etc.), and two fragmentary Mycenaean craters. Five gold diadems and a few stone and ivory objects were also found.
