[01] Israeli President concludes state visit

The President of Israel Mr. Ezer Weizman left Cyprus today after concluding a three-day official visit to the island at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Mr Glafcos Clerides.

During his stay President Weizman held talks with the political leadership focusing on the enhancement of bilateral relations in the fields of finance, commerce, science, high-tech and health.

Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides welcomed yesterday the statements made by the Israeli President on Cyprus' European prospect and described his visit as "very important".

Asked to comment if President Weizman's assurances that "the Israeli- Turkish military agreement does not concern any third party least of all Cyprus" have allayed President Clerides' concerns, Mr Stylianides said that this depends on future developments.

[02] Kasoulides-Matutes hold talks in Madrid

Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides discussed yesterday in Madrid Cypru's E.U. accession course and the Cyprus problem with his Spanish counterpart Abel Matutes .During their meeting Mr. Kasoulides briefed Mr. Matutes on the latest UN initiative on Cyprus, aimed at breaking the current deadlock.

The two Foreign Ministers also discussed ways of further enhancing bilateral relations as well as bilateral co-operation within the framework of the Barcelona process in view of the forthcoming meeting in Valencia (Spain).

Replying to questions during a press conference, Mr Kasoulides reminded that President Clerides' proposal for the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the country's negotiating team for EU talks remains on the table.

Mr Kasoulides' visit to Madrid is part of a European tour aimed at discussing the Republic's EU accession course and the Cyprus problem.
