[01] UN Special Representative meets Germany's Deputy Foreign Minister

The UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Cyprus, Professor Han Sung-Joo had a meeting Friday (8.11.96) with Germany's Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hoyer during which the prospects for peace negotiations for a Cyprus solution were discussed.

A statement issued in Bonn after the meeting, urges both the Greek and Turkish sides in Cyprus to show good will and intensify their efforts towards successful negotiations under UN auspices.

The German Deputy Foreign Minister said: "The incidents in Cyprus during this summer and autumn have made very clear the urgent need for efforts for de-escalation and a solution. We continue to have a strong interest for redoubling of the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the United Nations. Now it is important that both Cypriot leaders of the two communities contribute to lessening of tension on the island and to show a will for compromise, so that future negotiations will be successful".

[02] Foreign Minister attends Middle East-North Africa Economic Summit

Cyprus is participating in the Middle East-North Africa Economic Summit with its Foreign Minister Alecos Michaelides leading a ten-member delegation.

The Summit, which is taking place in Cairo between 11-14 November, is jointly organised by the World Economic Forum and the Egyptian government and is supported by the United States, Russia, the European Union, Japan and Canada.

Eighty seven countries and 47 international organisations have been invited to attend. The Economic Summit will seek to promote and reinforce the spirit of compromise and reconstruction in the Middle East and North Africa, through the co-operation between governments and the private sector of the countries in the wider region.

[03] Cyprus Electricity Board dismissed

The Council of Ministers at an extraordinary meeting on Friday 8.11.96 decided to dismiss the nine-member Board of Directors of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC),a semi-governmental organisation, pending investigations into alleged tender irregularities, following a discussion on the issue in the House of Representatives.

The Council of Ministers appointed nine new members of the Board and two independent investigators to examine how the tender for the supply of turbines and boilers for the new power plant at Vassiliko was awarded to the higher of two short-listed bids, amounting to more than 70 million Cyprus pounds.

Three of the Board members, including the Chairman, Polyvios Kolokos, had already offered their resignation. The remaining six members in a letter called for an independent investigation to prove that there was no scandal over why they had decided to overrule the recommendation of the majority of the technical committee and award the contract to the higher bid.
