[01] British MPs warn about flights to Turkish-occupied Cyprus

An early day motion tabled in the House of Commons on 4.11.96 reminds all British tour and airline companies that they risk losing their operating permits if they continue to blatantly ignore the UK government's policy not to allow flights to Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus or to permit passengers to be given the impression of direct flights from Britain to the area.

The motion expresses concern that passengers travelling from the UK to an internationally unrecognised final destination may not be aware that they are not covered for insurance purposes under the terms of the Warsaw Convention Treaty.

So far 38 MPs have signed the motion.

[02] Russian Justice Minister in Cyprus

Russia's Justice Minister Valentin Kovalev is visiting Cyprus for talks with his counterpart Alecos Evangelou and to sign a bilateral agreement on the transfer of convicted prisoners to serve time in their respective countries.

The Russian Minister was received by the President of the Republic and had separate meetings with the Foreign Minister, the President of the House of Representatives, the Attorney General and the President of the Supreme Court.

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with President Clerides, the Russian Justice Minister expressed satisfaction with the outcome of his visit and mentioned a series of other bilateral topics which are under consideration.

He noted the talks about providing legal cover and assistance to Cypriot and Russian citizens and firms, family law issues to cover mixed marriages and the adoption of legal regulations concerning the purchase of property by citizens of the two countries.
