  • [01] National Council convenes

    A meeting of the National Council, an advisory body comprised of the President of the Republic and representatives of all political parties in parliament is in session.

    The main opposition, centre right DISY, leftwing AKEL, centre party DIKO, socialist party EDEK, rightwing EVROKO and the Cyprus Greens participate with their leaders and an additional member each.

    The National Council is due to discuss current developments in the ongoing UN led negotiations in view of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias` and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu`s scheduled meeting at Greentree, Long Island with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon between January 22 and 24.

    Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led negotiations have been underway since 2008 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.

    [02] Ministers visit Cyprus EU Presidency facilities

    The members of the Ministerial Committee on European Presidency issues visited Monday the site of the Cyprus EU presidency Conference Centre and Press Centre, in Nicosia. Both facilities, which are interlinked, will be used to host meetings and facilitate Press coverage for Cyprus-based events during the second half of 2012.

    Present during the visit were Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, Minister of Finance Kikis Kazamias, Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzou, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou and Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis. Press and Information Office Director Eleonora Gavrielides accompanied the Ministers.

    In statements after the visit, Flourentzou noted that the site is due to be delivered on February 8. He also noted that the project, with a cost of 20.4 mln euros, is currently in the last phase of its development and added that the first conferences will take place next April.

    The Minister said he was content with the progress of works and expressed his satisfaction with the work done by the Public Works Department and the construction company, noting that the latter has kept all deadlines.

    [03] Baghdatis to participate in National team on Davis cup

    Cypriot champion Marcos Baghdatis will be the leader of Cyprus National team on tennis during the games of Davis Cup against Morocco.

    According to an announcement, issued here Monday by Cyprus Tennis Federation, the preparation of the national team for the games against Morocco, which will take place at the Palais des Sports - Spyros Kyprianou Indoor Stadium, in Limassol - Cyprus, between the 10th and 12th of February, is the final stage.

    Marcos Baghdatis, Rares Cuzdriodean and Sergis Kyradjis, led by coach Yiannos Hadjigeorghiou, as the captain, comprises the National Team of Cyprus.
