  • [01] Cyprus issue discussed between UNSG and Turkish FM

Cyprus was among several issues discussed last Saturday between UNSG Ban Ki Moon and Foreign Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu, during their meeting in Beirut.

According to an official announcement posted on the UN webpage, dated January 14th, the two men met in Lebanon where the Secretary-General was on an official visit during the weekend. They also discussed the situation in Syria, as well as Iran, it notes.

The said announcement refers to the death of former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash who passed away last Friday night, at the age of 88, in a hospital in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus after serious health problems.

The Secretary-General, his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, and his Special Representative for Cyprus, Lisa Buttenheim, expressed their condolences to Denktash family as well as to all Turkish Cypriots, Ban`s spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday.

[02] Government follows targeted policy on natural gas

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that the Government is following a targeted policy on the natural gas issue.

Asked by reporters on Sunday about the second gas licencing round, Stephanou said that the Government, despite the provocations and threats on behalf of Turkey, has successfully promoted the issue and that is ``because of the very specific, targeted policy followed by the Government as well as good planning and careful movements being made.``

He pointed out that this policy will be continued with regard to the second gas licencing round based on the laws and regulations of both Cyprus and the EU. ``

Stephanou also said that the related documents have been sent to the EU to be translated for publication in the EU Official Journal and the next step will be finalising the contract documents.
