  • [01] Omirou: Need to free G/c side from process ``full of traps``

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has said that the new meeting to take place late January in New York on the Cyprus problem constitutes most probably the last chance for the Greek Cypriot side to free itself from a process which, as he said, is full of traps.

Addressing Monday evening an event organized by the Turkish occupied community of Massari, Omirou said that the Greek Cypriot side should protest to the UN the Turkish sides intransigent stance at the Cyprus talks and withdraw the concessions it made at the negotiating table, since the Turkish side has not responded accordingly.

Otherwise, he noted, an international conference on the Cyprus issue could be convened, with an arbitration, which will not be a balanced one, or with an announcement that the talks have reached a deadlock and the responsibility for that will be attributed to both sides equally.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon has extended a new an invitation to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, to meet with him in New York 23-24 January in the framework of the UN backed direct talks for the Cyprus problem.
