    Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that the EU regulation providing for direct trade between the Republics northern Turkish occupied areas and the EU is wrong and is in conflict with EU decisions.

    Stephanou said that the government of Cyprus makes efforts to address the issue with political and legal actions.

    Invited to comment on the fact that the procedure on the direct trade regulation begins today in the European Parliament and asked to say whether the so called elections in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus will have any impact on the process, he said that the Republic of Cyprus has a clear position on the issue.

    He added that the content and the philosophy of the direct trade regulation are wrong and are in conflict with the EU decisions.

    Stephanou noted that the Republic of Cyprus has prepared its policy on the issue and will stay committed on that to deal the issue in a joint effort with the political parties, the Cypriot Members of the European Parliament, as well as Cyprus ally countries in the EU, especially Greece.

    [02] PATRIARCH - CYPRUS ARCHBISHOP - CONSTANINOPLE

    Official talks between delegations of the Church of Cyprus, led by Archbishop Chrysostomos II and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, under Patriarch Bartholomew are underway at the Phanar.

    Speaking to reporters briefly before the start of the talks, Patriarch Bartholomew said that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip ERdogan has not yet replied to a request by Archbishop Chrysostomos to meet him.

    On his part, the Cypriot church leader said that we shall be here today, and he if wants to see us, we are here available to meet with him.

    [03] EMIR OF KUWAIT - CYPRUS ISSUE

    Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah has expressed hope a settlement of the Cyprus problem will soon be reached.

    The Emir received on April 14 the credentials of new Cyprus Ambassador to Kuwait, cited in Amman, Petros Eftyhiou.

    The Emir asked to be informed about the latest developments in the Cyprus question and Eftyhiou briefed him about the latest developments in the current phase of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem. The Emir expressed the wish that Cyprus will soon reach a solution to its political problem.
