  • [01] UK - US - CYPRUS - NEGOTIATIONS

UK and US Governments have called on the new Turkish Cypriot leader to continue negotiations aiming to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Commenting on developments after Dervis Eroglu won Sunday`s illegal elections in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, a Foreign Office spokesperson said in a written statement that we look forward to the continuation of negotiations towards a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus following the pause in the talks for elections in the north of the island.

It is important to exploit this unique opportunity, he noted.

According to written statement issued by a State Department official the United States congratulates Dervis Eroglu for his victory in elections held to select the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

[02] BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER - INTERVIEW

The UK continues to fully endorse UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus, British High Commissioner here Peter Millett has said, adding that London, as a guarantor power, will continue to support the peace talks towards a political settlement.

In an interview with CNA, days before his departure from the island and under current restrictions imposed by London ahead of Mays elections in the UK, Millett noted the important progress made in the negotiations between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat over the past 18 months.

The High Commissioner expressed hope for further progress towards a solution in the coming months, noting this is a Cypriot led process.

Millett believes that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between London and Nicosia, has created enormous opportunities which offer mutual benefit to both countries.

On bilateral cooperation, he said there have been initiatives to help Cyprus curb football hooliganism, improve road safety, tackle organised crime and furthering research and development.

[03] CYPRUS - EU TRANSPORT MINISTERS - FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS

Transport Ministers of the European Union have adopted a common policy to gradually lift flight restrictions imposed because of the ash cloud of an Icelandic volcano.

According to an official statement issued on Monday, Communications and Works Minister Erato Kozakou Markoulli discussed on Monday, via teleconference, with her European counterparts, ways to handle the consequences of the situation that the ash cloud has caused to airlines.

She said EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas proposal seems to be the most favourable and is supported by Eurocontrol.

    [04] CA FLIGHTS - CANCELLATIONS

Tuesday`s Cyprus Airways flight to Rome is expected to take place as scheduled while the flight to Vienna will most probably also take place, according to Cyprus Airways spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou

Kyriakou said that sixteen flights have already been cancelled for today due to the Icelandic volcanic ash that has covered the airspace of many northern and central European countries.
