The United Nations are waiting for a clarification of Dervis Eroglu`s intentions regarding the Cyprus problem, and the period leading up to June 15, when the resolution on renewing the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is scheduled to be adopted.

This specific period is expected to be crammed with meetings and discussions, according to UN diplomats.

Commenting on developments after Eroglu won Sunday`s illegal elections in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, a UN diplomatic source said one should wait and see, pointing out that Eroglu must work within the parameters already agreed on.

``We have to wait and see, but if the process is to have a chance to succeed, Eroglu has to work within the parameters agreed by the two sides and endorsed by the international community,`` the same source said.

Messages have already been sent to Eroglu and Turkey via diplomatic channels, and many players in the Cyprus problem are expected to make similar statements.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer is expected to arrive in New York on May 26 for meetings with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and other UN senior officials and members of the Security Council.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has been engaged in peace talks with Mehmet Ali Talat, until yesterday the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, since September 2008, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.

    [02] ARCHBISHOP - CONSTANTINOPLE

Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos` II arrived Sunday to Constantinople for an official visit, at the invitation of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

The Archbishop visited Brussels earlier this week where he addressed a seminar and had meetings with European officials. He was scheduled to fly from Brussels to Constantinople on Friday. However, Brussels` airport remained closed after the huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano, spread out across Europe.

The Archbishop travelled on Saturday from Brussels to Barcelona, from where he departed on a private jet. On Sunday morning he arrived at Constantinople airport.

    [03] CYPRUS AIRWAYS ASH CLOUD

Cyprus Airways has announced the cancellation of its morning flights to European destinations, apart from the airports in Greece, due to the huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano, which resulted in the closure of the air space in many European airports.

In statements to CNA, Cyprus Airways Spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou said that this morning, 14 flights will be affected to and from Moscow, Zurich, Amsterdam, Manchester, Paris, Frankfurt and London.

He added that flights to and from Greece, (Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes) as well as to and from destinations in the Middle East are not affected.

    [04] CYPRUS - GRAND PRIX FITASC-SPORTING

The ``GRAND PRIX FITASC-SPORTING`` will be taking place at the international shooting range in Limassol, from 21 to 23 April.

So far, the competition has drawn the participation of around 150 shooters, men and women, from seven countries.

The British world champion in shooting George Digweed is also included among the participating athletes.
