Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides said the procedure was trouble-free and ended at noon.

He noted that for the religious groups, there were four candidacies for the Maronites, two for the Latins and two for the Armenians, while for the Greek Cypriots` seats there were 487 candidacies from political parties and independent candidates, namely 179 in Nicosia, 104 in Limassol, 95 in Famagusta, 46 in Larnaca, 36 in Paphos and 27 in Kyrenia.

Replying to questions, Savvides said objections to the candidacies could be submitted as soon as the list of candidates was posted on the board, and "we have to reply within 24 hours."

Savvides said that for the preparation of the ballots he will be meeting with the parties tomorrow, because within 24 hours the procedure must be completed and any objections examined, before sending the ballots for printing.

Asked about the number of seats in the Larnaca District, where the candidates are seeking a sixth seat due to the increase of the town`s population, the Chief Returning Officer said it was up to the House of Representatives to convene to discuss the matter and amend the relevant table.

"The Chief Returning Officer has the law in his hands and that law states clearly the number of seats in each electoral district," Savvides added.
