  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - EGYPT - AGREEMENTS

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos starts today a three-day official visit to Egypt, at the invitation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

This is the first official visit of a Cypriot President to Egypt since the late President Archbishop Makarios III was in Cairo in 1966 and it is expected to boost political, economic and commercial relations.

A significant number of bilateral agreements will be signed. Most significant is the signing of five interstate agreements between Cyprus and Egypt, which the Cabinet approved on Wednesday, on research and co-exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits lying between the exclusive economic zones of the two countries.

President Papadopoulos, who arrived in Cairo last night, was received by Egyptian Minister of Transport Mohamed Mansour.

The official welcome ceremony will take place later today. President Papadopoulos will hold meetings with Mubarak, Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, Speaker of the Egyptian People`s Assembly Ahmed Fathy Sorour and General Secretary of the Arab League Amr Moussa.
