Cyprus President in Athens for official visit

Larnaca, Nov 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos left this morning for Greece for a three-day official visi, at the invitation of Greek Republic President Costis Stefanopoulos.

The official welcome ceremony will take place at the Presidential Palace. Talks will follow between President Papadopoulos and Greek President Stefanopoulos.

Tomorrow the Cyprus President will hold talks with Greek Premier Costas Simitis.

President Papadopoulos is accompanied by First Lady Fotini Papadopoulou, Foreign Minister Giorgos Iacovou, Undersecretary to the President Christodoulos Pashiardis, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides and Director of the President's Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis.

Papadopoulos: ECHR decision against Turley should be implemented

Larnaca, Nov 25 (CNA) -- The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has the right to supervise the implementation of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision in the Titina Loizidou case against Turkey and this is the position of the Greek Cypriot side, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stated here today.

Speaking on departure for Athens, for his first official visit to Greece, President Papadopoulos said the ''decision should be implemented without preconditions and the Committee of Ministers are to decide whether measures should be taken against Turkey''.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said the result of the so-called elections in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus in December ''will give a clear picture of what might follow''.

Cyprus protests persecution of T/C journalists

United Nations, Nov 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has strongly protested to the United Nations against the persecution of Turkish Cypriot journalists in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

The protest is included in a letter dated 17 November 2003 from Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andreas Mavroyianis addressed to the UN Secretary-General.

Athens, Nov 25 (CNA) -- Greek President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos has stressed that the current period is extremely important for Cyprus and that the interest shown by the international community in a Cyprus settlement should be utilised.

Speaking after official talks here today with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos he added that the Cyprus problem has become a European problem.

The Cyprus President stressed that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to participate in negotiations for a Cyprus settlement under the auspices of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

President Papadopoulos started his three-day official visit to Greece with a meeting with the Greek President.

President Papadopoulos received a red carpet welcome by Stefanopoulos. The Cypriot President inspected a presidential guard of honour.

Papadopoulos is accompanied by First Lady Fotini Papadopoulou, Foreign Minister Giorgos Iacovou, Undersecretary to the President Christodoulos Pashiardis, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides and Director of the President's Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis.

Present were also Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis and Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Christos Panagopoulos.

In a brief conversation before the official talks, Stefanopoulos said to President Papadopoulos that ''Hellas attributes great importance to your visit, which happens at a very critical stage in view of Cyprus' EU accession''.

While at the Presidential Palace, President Papadopoulos signed the Declaration for the Olympic Truce.

Nicosia, Nov 25 (CNA) -- The population in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus increased by 1,4% in the year 2002 reaching 715,000.

This was noted in the 2002 Demographic Report published by the Statistical Service giving, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality and divorces.

Nobody expects an Annan plan to be ideal, Greek President says

Athens, Nov 25 (CNA)--Nobody expects an Annan plan to be ideal, but the UN plan to reunify Cyprus should provide the conditions which would make it functional, Greek President Costis Stefanopoulos has said.

Speaking to the press after official talks here today with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Stefanopoulos said he discussed with the Cypriot President a possible request by the Greek Cypriot side to resume the UN-led talks after the next month's so-called parliamentary elections in Turkish-occupied Cyprus.

In his remarks, Papadopoulos said ''we are ready to return to the negotiating table under the aegis of the UN Secretary General who has to accept first to begin afresh an initiative and call the talks''.

''How and when the talks can resume remains to be seen, after the so-called elections in the occupied areas. It would be neither wise nor useful for the Greek Cypriot side to announce its moves to Annan,'' he said.

Stefanopoulos said Papadopoulos' visit to Athens is extremely important and called on the Greek Cypriot side to make the most of the interest Europe has in Cyprus.

''The Cyprus question continues to be an international problem'', the Greek President said, adding that Europe's interest in the solution of the Cyprus problem creates new prospects for a settlement.

Stefanopoulos reiterated that both Greece and Cyprus accept the Annan plan as a basis for further negotiations.

''Nobody expects an Annan plan to be ideal but it should have those provisions that would make it functional'', the Greek President said.

Stefanopoulos said these conditions could be discussed until May 1 and stressed that the Turkish side should also be ready to negotiate as well.

He said the Greek Cypriot side should not let time go by without preparing for talks and referred to the working committees which study various aspects of the Annan plan that should be examined in order to render it acceptable.

These concern the Turkish occupation, the presence of illegal settlers in occupied Cyprus, the functionality of the plan, its compatibility with the acquis communautaire as well as the fate of thousands of refugees.

Asked if the recent terrorist attacks in Turkey could strengthen the role of the Turkish establishment and therefore affect the Cyprus question and Greco-Turkish relations, Stefanopoulos said that nobody could predict the reaction of the Turkish government and the military to these attacks.

Stefanopoulos condemned the attacks which resulted in the loss of innocent lives.

Athens, Nov 25 (CNA)--Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, who toured the Athens Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Centre accompanied by Greek Culture Minister Evangellos Venizelos, has expressed his admiration about the work done by Greece in preparation for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

''I am impressed by what I saw. To read about it is one thing but to actually see it is something else'', Papadopoulos, who is on a three-day official visit to Greece, told the press after the tour.

He said ''the work done so far is a gigantic concerted effort carried out with success''.

Papadopoulos said that he was informed that the deadlines for the preparation for the Olympic Games will be met and he expressed certainty that Greece will succeed in this huge undertaking.

Turkey's non compliance with Court ruling debated

Nicosia, Nov 25 (CNA) -- Discussions at the Council of Europe to secure compliance by Turkey with a European Court ruling relating to human rights violations in Cyprus continue in the next couple of days in the wake of a demarches made by the Netherlands to Nicosia in an attempt to close the Titina Loizidou case.
