National Council discusses Cyprus problem and EU course

Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides briefed today the National Council on his recent meetings in New York with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, as well as the European Commission's progress report on Cyprus, released on October 9.

Speaking after the four-hour-long meeting of the National Council, made up of political party leaders, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said views were expressed mainly on the Cyprus problem and the two ad hoc committees set up at Kofi Annan's suggestion to deal with technical aspects of the question.

Papapetrou noted that the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, would reconvene on October 21, after President Clerides' talks in Athens with the Greek leadership.

President Clerides is flying to Athens on October 17 to meet the following day with Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

Cyprus Rally in WRC honours the island, Course Clerk says

Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) - The fact that Cyprus will be hosting its rally in the context of the World Rally Championship (WRC) for a fourth running year is an honour for the island, Clerk of the Course Takis Kyriakides has said.

He also reassured that despite the positive for Cyprus decision of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the Cyprus Automobile Association would ''neither drop the level of the rally nor will it stop struggling to keep WRC''.

Kyriakides told a press conference that ''our national rally'' would be held from June 19 to 22, 2003, a date to be ratified by FIA soon.

He said the Association of Organisers of World Championship Rallies, of which Cyprus is a member, is promoting a proposal that WRC rallies be renewed for three consecutive year periods.

Replying to questions, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis, who attended the press conference, underlined the importance of the rally for the economy of the island, noting that ''significant financial benefits reaching 12 million pounds'' are expected.
