    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- The 27th Cyprus International Fair will run this year from May 24 to June 2, and host pavilions from 12 countries while another 20 countries will be represented by their local agents.

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA)-- The Cyprus State Theatre presents today in Shanghai, China, Aeschylus' ancient tragedy "Seven against Thebes", after two successful performances in Beijing, watched by an enthusiastic audience of 1,500.

    Luo Jinlin, drama director, of the China Central Academy of Drama said that the play, also presented at last year's Epidavros Art Festival in Greece, was welcomed as one of the most celebrated performances in the Art Festival.

    Cyprus-EU JPC to begin tomorrow

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- The political situation in Cyprus as well as the current EU-Cyprus relations will be among the subjects to be discussed at the Cyprus-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) which starts its three-day deliberations here tomorrow.

    According to the draft programme, the JPC will also deal with issues regarding EU-Cyprus accession negotiations, the cultural map of Cyprus, the right for free navigation and trade and the protection of the environment and the follow up of the Akamas efforts.

    Securities Exchange Commission in Turkey for meeting

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- A three-member delegation, representing the Cyprus Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), left for Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey, to attend an international conference on issues relating to the smooth running of SECs on a worldwide scale.

    Commission chairman Marios Clerides, heading the delegation, has told CNA that the Commission will participate in discussions among emerging markets and a meeting of candidate countries, seeking European Union membership, to discuss the operation of Stock Exchanges.

    Government seeks to safeguard rights of Cypriots in British Bases

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Britain have been engaged in consultations with the European Commission to ensure that Cypriot nationals, living and working within the British Bases Area, will enjoy the same rights as other Cypriots in the rest of the country, once it becomes a European Union member.

    Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides told the House European Affairs Committee that talks with London are "moving along fine" and that the common agricultural policy, EU structural funds, fisheries matters, customs and excise issues, social security and indirect taxation are all being discussed as part of the ongoing dialogue.

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) completed here today the destruction of 4,500 weapons that were under UN safekeeping since 1972.

    Present at today's procedure was Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Kosis. UNFICYP Commander Lt. Gen. Jin Ha Hwang presided over the decommissioning of the last of the weapons in the stockpile.

    Russia backs increased UN role in peace talks

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- Moscow believes the UN should have a more active role in the peace process aimed at finding a viable settlement in Cyprus and called on the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to intensify their efforts towards this goal.

    Vladimir Prygin, Russian foreign ministry envoy for Cyprus, said the Turkish Cypriot side should adopt a more positive and constructive approach and warned of negative repercussions in the Cyprus question if the opportunity afforded by the country's European Union accession is not seized.

    Britain: core issues can be cracked by end of June

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) -- Britain has given its full backing to UN calls to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to reach an agreement by the end of June on the core issues that make up the Cyprus problem.

    Lord David Hannay, London's special envoy for Cyprus, also warned of negative repercussions should the current peace effort fail and said Britain will give UN negotiators "unstinting support".

    Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met for one hour and 40 minutes this afternoon, in the context of the ongoing UN-led direct talks on the Cyprus problem.

    The meeting took place in the presence of the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.
