Christofias launches official visit to China

Nicosia, May 21 (CNA) - Cypriot House of Representatives President, Demetris Christofias, who is heading a parliamentary delegation on an official visit to China, had his first official meeting today with Chairman of the National People's Congress Li Peng, who said his country supports a Cyprus settlement that will safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.

Christofias discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem with Li Peng, noting particularly the good will of the Greek Cypriot side for a settlement, as opposed to the intransigence of Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who insist on a solution that will divide the island.

Italian plane arrives for Palestinians, Spanish one to follow

Larnaca, May 21 (CNA) - Three of the Palestinians brought to Cyprus after being released from Bethlehem's Nativity Church may leave the island aboard an Italian plane, destined for Italy.

Cyprus Police Special Forces' Commander, Iacovos Papacostas, who visited the Larnaca hotel where the 13 Palestinians are staying, said three Italian police officers were in the area and that an Italian Learjet had already landed at Larnaca Airport.

A Spanish military airplane is expected to arrive in Cyprus tonight, to take the Palestinians to their destinations.

The EU had reached an agreement last night to transfer twelve of the thirteen Palestinians to European Union countries. The thirteenth will remain in Cyprus temporarily.

Asked if the three Palestinians to be sent to Italy would depart on a separate flight, namely the Learjet, Papacostas said no decision had been made so far and that the issue was still being discussed.

The Ambassadors of Italy and Spain, the Greek Consul and the representative of the Palestinian Authority in Cyprus visited the Palestinians this afternoon at the hotel and stayed with them for about three hours.
