[01] BUILDING UP THE PEACE PROCESS AND STABILIZATION IN THE REGIONYesterday, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic received US State Secretary Assistant John Shatuck. Mr. Shatuck is staying in Belgrade for the consultations with Yugoslav Foreign Minister Milan Milutinovic on issues concerning cooperation and joint efforts to build up the peace process and stabilize in the region. US Charge d'Affairs in Belgrade, Mr. Richard Miles and Milan Milutinovic also attended the talks. (Politika, Nov. 8,1996.)[02] AGAINST THE EVENTUAL CUT OF UN MANDATE"The eventual cut of UNTAES mandate in Eastern Slavonia, Baranya and Western Srem could endanger the security and the peace process in this region and would mean a serious drawback for the entire Dayton peace process", says Ambassador Vladislav Jovanovic - Chief of the Yugoslav Mission to the UN in his letter addressed to the Chair of the Security Council. Ambassador Jovanovic's letter followed the indication that the Security Council, upon Croatia's request, could cut the mandate of UNTAES in this region, that is, instead from 15. July next year to 15. January 1997. (TANJUG, Nov. 8,1996.)[03] COMMENDATIONS FOR FRYThe Chairman of the so-called Subregional Consultative Committee and the Special Envoy of the European Security and Cooperation Organization Chairman, Norwegian General Vigkleik Eide expressed great commendations to FR Yugoslavia for fulfilling all the arrangements in registering and decreasing military forces.Yugoslavia has correctly registered its armament and in destroying the surplus arms, it was more diligent than requested, said Eide. The Norwegian general also commended Croatia, although it began the process of surplus armament destruction only on the 5th of November. Eide avoided to criticize in any way the behaviour of Bosnia and Herzegovina Federation and the Sarajevo Government, although he admitted that there is a delay and that the precise report on the number of arms and pieces under control is still being awaited. The General said that in Republic of Srpska the registered and real situation with the armament greatly differs. Asked whether it is not ridiculous to talk about disarmament now that Muslims and Croats are getting arms with the assistence of one or more countries, General Eide repeated the old clichéee that everybody has the right to modernize their arms, the only important thing being that they keep within the limits agreed upon. [04] COOPERATION BETWEEN FRY AND EU BASED ON PARTNERSHIPYugoslav Deputy Foreign Minister - Mr. Zivadin Jovanovic talked yesterday in Bonn with the Political Director of the German Foreign Ministry - Mr. Wolfgang Ischinger about the further enhancing of relations between the two countries. During the talks, the development of political dialogue initiated during the talks that Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic had with German State Secretary Klaus Kinkel in Belgrade was assessed as positive.The need of advancing the cooperation of FRY with the European Union based on partnership and mutual interest was also discussed. The expectations are that in accordance with the past political talks, favourable conditions for the renewal and widening of such cooperation will be created, envisaging that this is at the same time an important premise for the advancement of the regional cooperation of the two countries in realization of the Dayton and Paris Agreement. (Politika ekspres, Nov. 8, 1996) [05] FRY REPRESENTATIVES IN ATHENSIn Athens, the Second European Conference on peace, democracy and cooperation in the Balkans is being held. The Conference is attended by the representatives of numerous non-governmental organizations from twenty countries, i.e., Balkan, Europe, the European Council and the European Parliament. The meeting is also attended by the members of FR Yugoslavia non-governmental organizations, the Yugoslav Women's Union and the Syndicate Union of Serbia.According to the first speakers in the sessions, the Balkans have entered a new, very important period, where, after the reaching of the Dayton Agreement and overcoming of the crisis in former Yugoslavia, the possibilities of full cooperation between the countries in the region and their prosperity are open. [06] I WOULD NOT WISH IT UPON ANYBODY"I would not wish upon anubody the sanctions the Security Council decreed against Yugoslavia", said Mr. Alexander Ilichev - Secretary of the UN Security Council Committee for the implementation of sanctions against FR Yugoslavia, speaking yesterday in Geneva, at the International meeting of the Cran Montana Forum, dealing with sanctions.He suggested that this Committee will be finally abolished within two or three days, and revealed that he has prepared the report on the Committee's work and will submitt it both to the Security Council and the UN General Assembly. [07] SUPPORTING THE FR YUGOSLAVIA'S RETURN TO THE WORLD FINANCIAL MARKETSSerbian Government Deputy President Slobodan Babic and the Minister of Finance Dusan Vlatkovic received Mr. Dan Streint, Vice-president of Merril Lynch, the world's biggest investment bank .According to Mr. Streint, the primary goal of this bank, managing the capital of over 1000 billions of dollars, is the concrete support of FR Yugoslavia's return to the world financial markets. The bank is interested in returning to these regions and to our market, as well as for the Serbian and Yugoslav industry to rejoin the world market. (Politika, Nov. 8,1996.) [08] CHANCE IN PALESTINEThe Serbian Minister of Construction Dr. Branislav Ivkovic stated yesterday that the Yugoslav construction companies could obtain important jobs in the construction and reconstruction of the Palestinian Self-governing Region in Israel.The construction projects in the region of Gaza and West Coast, according to the present assessments, should last between 10 and 15 yeast, and the total value of the works reaches some twenty billions of dollars. [09] FIRES DIRECTED BY MUSLIM AUTHORITIESThe Croat arsonists, who burned all the houses in three Serbian villages near Drvar about ten days ago, have been joined the day before yesterday by Muslims who burned many houses and other buildings in the Serbian village of Sokosnica.The fires in Sokosnica were first noticed by IFOR reconaissance team controlling the village in a chopper. This was said yesterday by IFOR speaker - British Officer Paul Brook. The helicopter crew noticed, said also Colonel Brook, that after setting the fires, a police vehicle left the site but the helicopter followed it to the police station, this being a definite proof that the fires have been staged by Muslim Authorities.
