  • [01] Parliamentary debates

    Senate started on Monday debates on the draft bill to enable the Cabinet adopt emergency ordinances during the Parliamentary recess. The normative act which was previously adopted by the Chamber of Deputies allows the Executive adopt ordinances in the domains of foreign policy,budget and finance, industry, trade, agriculture and transports, education, health, cults and scientific research. The Chamber started debates on the harmonization of the Criminal Code of Romania with Rezolution 1123 of the Council of Europe. Alterations of the Criminal Code have in view the protection of all citizens of the country regardless of their position or social activity or their official status.

    [02] Continuation of Romania's participation in KFOR in Bosnia

    Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies received a letter by which the President of Romania Emil Constantinescu asks Parliament to continue approval of Romania's participation in the KFOR stability force in Bosnia - Hertzegovina with both a national contingent and a detachment. The contingent is made up of 62 military and have their army engineering as their effective specialization. The Romanian detachment is incorporated into the Dutch force and henceforth the Netherlands supports all expenses minus salaries of the military. The Romanian National Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Finance will present the Cabinet of Romania a draft rezolution in this sense, namely the continued participation of Romania in the KFOR force in Bosnia - Hertzegovina.

    [03] Meeting of the leaders of PNL and PNTCD

    On Monday evening a meeting took place of the leaders of the Christian Democratic National Peasants Party and the National Liberal Party. During a press conference after the meeting leaders of the parties mentioned said that they agreed to ammend bill on the ceiling of the parties seeking Parliament participation to five per cent. In as far as collaboration between the two parties is concerned both parties declared that an answer will be given after the meeting of the National Council of the National Liberal Party on 15 July. Both Mr. Ion Diaconescu and Mr. Valeriu Stoica, the first being the president of PNTCD and the second the first vicepresident of PNL said that if nothing happens the chances of the Romanian Democratic Convention are diminished during the general elections in the fall.

    [04] Constantinescu and Isarescu might share the same ticket at the next general elections

    The spokesman of the Romanian cabinet said that the Prime Minister accepted the message of the transitional forum of PNTCD by which the leaders of the main ruling party of Romania maintain their support for the candidacy of present President Constantinescu for a second term a case in which the present Prime Minister Isarescu could continue to be the head of the Romanian cabinet. For the time being Mr. Isarescu does not wish to make any statement to the media. According to first vicepresident of PNTCD President Constantinescu launched Romania in the process of European integration and Prime Minister Isarescu manged the integration process. Vicepresident of PNL Paul Pacuraru says the idea is positive and clarifies the domestic political spectrum.

    [05] Former foreign minister Manescu passed away

    Former foreign minister of Romania Corneliu Manescu died Monday morning at 07:30 at the Fundeni Hospital of Bucharest. Manescu was foreign minister of our country in the interval 1961 - 1972 and in 1967 he was for a year the President of the 12-th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In March 1989 he was one of the signatories of the LETTER OF THE SIX which is known as the ANTI CEAUSESCU DOCUMENT.

    [06] Visit of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok to Romania

    On Monday the President of Romania Emil Constantinescu and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Wim Kok estimated that the two countries had excellent relations of collaboration in all domains of activity. The President of Romania appreciated the consistent support of the Netherlands for the activity of Romania with a view to European integration. The guest said that one of the targets of the Netherlands is to have Romania within the European Union and NATO. Prime Minister Wim Kok said that the Netherlands was standing for the abolition of the visas for the Romanian citizens travelling to the European Union perimeter but, the guest added, it was necessary for Romania to improve frontier control. He also underlined the necessity of legislative stability in order to attract foreign investors to Romania as well as the role of the Netherlands in the process of assisting the Romanian banking system.

    [07] Hot summer and drought in Romania

    More than 35 Celsius on an average for the second interval of summer, according to Meteo specialists. Not much rain which means continued drought, more than usually hot July and August with temperatures of up to 38 Celsius in the Southern and Western parts of Romania. In conclusion one may say that this Summer is among the droughtiest summers of the century which concludes.

    [08] CALENDAR

    Prime Minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok is on an official visit to Romania. Today the distinguished Dutch guest visits the Parliament of Romania and meets the chairmen of the two chambers of the Romanian Legislative Body. Then the Prime Minister of the Netherlands delivers a speech before the joint chambers of Romania's Parliament. After the visit to the Parliament the guest goes to Moldova for talks at Iasi with local officials in all walks of life.

    Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman is in Warsaw for the ministerial conference COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES.

    A delegation of the Academy of Italian Military Aeronautical Forces led by commander general Giulio Maianini is in Romania for a visit in the interval 27 - 29 June at the invitation of his Romanian opposite number brigade general Petrisor Mandu.

    Press Conferences of the political parties - Socialist Party at 11:00 and PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania at noon.

    Romanian Institute of Social Democratic Studies together with the Friedrich Ebert foundation of Germany are organizing a symposium on the theme GLOBALIZATION - REALITY AND INCERTITUDES at the seat of the Romanian Senate today.

    Following the initiative of the Chambers of Commerce of Bekes and Arad the inauguration takes place today of a Romanian - Hungarian information Internet system.

    At the third edition of the Festival DAYS OF ROMANIAN - GREEK CULTURE unfolding at Constanta a first is scheduled for today, namely, the third symphony composed by Mikis Theodorakis in the interpretation of soprano Anda Olimpia Pop.
