[01] A reception takes place today on the occasion of the awarding by the French Embassy to Romania of the LEGION D'HONEUR with the rank of CHEVALIER to the Romanian art historian and critic RADU VARIA.Manifestation organized by the Romanian Association of the Victims of Stalinist Repression on the occasion of 60 years since the people living in Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina and the county of Herta were compelled to leave their native lands following an ultimatum given by the former USSR then led by Stalin to Romania and according to which the afore mentioned regions were given to the USSR.[02] Debates of the Romanian ParliamentSenators and Members of the Chamber of Deputies adopted the draft decision for the setting up of the commission of enquiry regarding the financing of the political parties and candidates to the presidency of Romania during the electoral campaigns of 1990, 1992 and 1996. He added that of the 33 families that had turned the side-walk across the Town Hall into a home only five are entitled to homes, according to provisions of law, as only five meet the requirements. They are offered temporary shelter in a hostel of the city of Bucharest and a promise that the general mayor will give them flats or apartments when he can; anyway they have to vacate the sidewalk so that public order is restored.[07] President of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu attended the symposium on the theme GLOBALIZATION BETWEEN REALITY AND INCERTITUDESIn a speech which was delivered at the symposium on the theme mentioned Ion Iliescu said that after 1990 two trends of development had materialized in Romania: one is a come back to pre-war Romania and which, being promoted by the encumbent power is reducing Romania to a state of poverty and a growing gap separating our country from the other European countries. This model according to Ion Iliescu is incompatible with the exigencies of globalization as it generates economic and social processes that do nothing else but lead to the regress of our society. Another trend would be a durable development by the selective involvement of the existing economic structures and the development of a structure to establish long term priorities. Ion Iliescu also said that in order to face globalization Romania must modernize education and economy and also strongly develop scientific development.[08] Bankrupcy procedures at the International Bank of ReligionsManagement of the National Bank of Romania has decided that necessary procedures will start for the bankruptcy of the mentioned bank as the debts are well above possibilities of the bank to proceed henceforth with activity. The papers reach the Bucharest Court tomorrow and after the bank goes bankrupt following a court decision deposits to the bank are to be returned up to the value of 55 mil lei. In case the deposits were made in hard currency returns are made in the national currency of Romania - lei - at a rate which is established by the National Bank of Romania in close relationship with the ratio lei/USD during the day bankruptcy was declared.[09] Unirea Commercial Bank under special supervisionNational Bank of Romania decided on special supervision measures for the UNIREA Commercial Bank until this bank has unilateral guarantees that it can go back to normal activity.[10] Salaries in RomaniaAccording to the National Commission for Statistics the average salary for May was of only 94.3 per cent as against that of April while the net salary went down to two million lei talking in average terms. Last in point o salary earning come people working in agriculture, sanitary engineering, health and social assistance who earn between 1420000 - 1650000 lei a month.[11] Gas price goes up in RomaniaSNP PETROM announced gas price went up by 200 - 300 lei per litre. Gasoline costs two hundred lei more and Diesel costs 300 lei more; Premium gas costs 11200 lei per litre and Diesel between 8400 - 8600 lei.[12] The Netherlands supports efforts of Romania for Euro Atlantic integrationThe Prime Minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok who was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI said during his speech in the Parliament of Romania that his country was supporting the efforts of Bucharest to integrate Romania in the Euro Atlantic structures an action for which our country still needs to solve the problems of institutionalized children, environmental protection and the situation of some minority groups.[13] Visit of SACEUR Supreme Commander to RomaniaGeneral Joseph Ralston ends his two day visit to Romania today. He is in Romania for talks with top officials in the domain and a reception by the President of Romania. He has a meeting with the media later today. General Ralston said that his visit to our country shortly after he was appointed supreme commander of SACEUR was proof of the importance which is attached to Romania by the North Atlantic Alliance. The decision of adherence is a political one, recalled the general adding that he was very serious about his responsibility of ensuring best military consultancy to the allies for them to make a decision.[14] CALENDARIn Bucharest the National Military Circle organizes the round table under the heading ROMANIA AND NATO IN THE YEAR 2000 alongside the launching of the volume THE WASHINGTON TOP LEVEL MEETING OF 1999 - A GUIDE TO THE READER.President Emil Constantinescu is receiving general Joseph Ralston, SACEUR commander who is now visiting Romania. The President of Romania receives at the Cotroceni Palace the organizers of the Forum of the Young Romanians everywhere. The reception is followed by a press conference. The Cabinet debates Ordinance 58 regarding the maximum ceiling of national companies and state companies that have registered losses in the past year in the format which was agreed upon together with the Trade Unions. Petre Roman, foreign minister of Romania is holding the press conference of balansheet for the first six months of the year at the seat of the Romanian Foreign Ministry. Foreign Ministry of Romania, as coordinator, launches the national programme PHARE 2001 of non refundable financial assistance which comes from the European Union. Romanian National Defense Minister Sorin Frunzaverde is meeting with Joseph Ralston, SACEUR commander who is now visiting Romania. A press conference follows at the OTOPENI transport base near Bucharest. At the invitation of the French defense minister Alain Richard, the Romanian state secretary for issues of defense Ion Mircea Plingu attends the Washington Conference of the Transatlantic Forum of the European Union Orgaqnization. Romania is invited to be present there in its quality as EUO associate. In the interval 28 - 30 June London, the United Kingdom, is hosting the actions of the Mission of Economic Cooperation between Great Britain and Romania as part of which there is the seminar ROMANIAN BUSINESS DAY a meeting organized by the Romanian party in the Commission with the support of the British side.
