[01] Those responsible for miners' actions under investigation
Romanian Interior Minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu has ordered an inquiry
to establish the individual responsibilities of the commanders who ran the
Interior Ministry (MI) operations in Bumbesti and Costesti two weeks ago.
The results of the inquiry will be submitted to the Romanian Government and
the Country's Supreme Council for Defence (CSAT) by February 11. RADOR
[02] Senator Gyorgy Frunda's initiative to the CE's Parliamentary Assembly
should be discussed in parliament, the PUNR MP groups request
The MP groups representing the Romanians' National Unity Party (PUNR)
called for a debate in parliament over Senator Gyorgy Frunda's recent
initiative to the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly. The PUNR MPs
even believe that Senator Frunda should be removed from his job as Romanian
delegate to the CE. The proposal of a resolution to set up an ad hoc
commission on national minorities' rights is an abuse against the
parliamentary deonthology and, as the PUNR representatives put it, Mr
Frunda's initiative is deeply immoral and inconcevable for a Romanian MP
mandate. The PUNR MP groups believe that, once again, Senator Frunda did
nothing but tried to call for the resumption of the CE's monitoring of
Romania concerning the Romanian Hungarian minority rights. RADOR
[03] BNS-PRM meetings
In preparation of an official meeting between the National Trade Union
Block (BNS) and Greater Romania Party (PRM) leaders, two informal meetings
between the two sides were reported on Tuesday following a PRM initiative.
PRM leader Corneli Vadim Tudor claimed recently that one of the BNS leaders
got a 4 billion lei bribe for participating in the privatisation of the
Dacia Felix Bank. The BNS said it was breaking any relation with the PRM
until the name of the leader and the evidence in support of the allegation
were made public. If not, the BNS is expecting the PRM and its leader to
officially apologise for their lies about the BNS. RADOR
[04] PDSR's opinion on draft budget
The vicepresident of the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR), Ioan
Mircea Pascu, believes that the existing draft budget is a reflection of
the country's "bad administration" and the main source of growing social
unrest. He said the draft budget was an "instrument against the reform".
The PDSR leader believes that the recent tensions and developments in the
Jiu Valley were a proof of how bad the crisis has been administrated.

[05] Trade union leaders of CNSRL Fratia met senators of the PNL MP group
The leaders of the CNSRL Fratia (The Brotherhood) trade union have
presented the senators of the National Liberal Party (PNL) wwith the
demands put forward by the trade union confederation they represented. The
two sides have admitted that Romania had no other chance than promoting a
law designed to allow a series of programmes aimed at developing the
macroeconomy and its departments. The schedule of trade union actions
includes a Japanese strike on February 15, a warning strike on February 17
and the general strike on February 22, and this schedule is to be abserved.
The trade unionists would like the ministries to express their position on
the demands they were presented with as it was not the strike for strike's
sake but a solution to their problems that the workers were seeking.

[06] Meeting of Software Enterprises National Association
A conference of the Software Enterprises National Association opened at the
Elisabeth Palace in Bucharest on Tuesday. The comference is mainly
concentrating on ways to develop the software national industry. The
Romanian head of state, also the honorary president of the association, has
expressed his interest in the development of a national information
society. He said the existing human resources are able to put the
association's programmes into force, and the "Romanian trademark" should
appear on all Romanian intelligence-made products of the information

[07] Law supporting SMEs investments
At their meeting on Tuesday, the Romanian deputies have discussed a series
of issues concerning a law expected to support the investments of the SMEs.
The draft law is clearly establishing the status of the SMEs in complience
with the Romanian law and the EU recommendations. The draft law is designed
to encourage the SMEs and the investments in the field. It is also expected
to ensure an easier access to credits and their guarantees. RADOR
[08] The Nation Cathedral foundation stone laying-ceremony to take place on
Friday, February 5
Romanian Habitat Minister Nicolae Noica has announced that, according to
the final decision concerning the place where the Nation Cathedral may be
built, the new church will be placed in the Union Plaza, between the Union
supermarket and the Manuc's Inn. The church is expected to host some 2,000
people. The foundation stone-laying ceremony and the religious service are
planned on Friday, February 5 at 12:00. Participants will include the
Patriarch of the Romanian Christian-Orthodox Church Teoctist and Prime
Minister Radu Vasile. RADOR
[09] Criminals pardoned by President Emil Constantinescu
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu has signed a decree on Tuesday
pardoning a number of criminals who served prison terms or still had to
serve prison terms for minor crimes. The criminals include journalist
Cornel Dan Sabau who was sentenced to a 10-month prison term for calumny.

[10] Tourism in Sibiu
A growing number of tourists was reported in the Transylvanian town of
Sibiu since the UNESCO programme of "Sibiu - European Confluences" began
last May. Sibiu was visited by 4.23 per cent of the tourists who travelled
to Romania last year. The "Sibiu - Hermanstadt" programme is aimed at
preserving and promoting the historic treasures of the town as well as
developing the economy in the area. RADOR
