  • [01] TURKISH SUPPORT FOR RECOVERY OF ALBANIAN ARMY

    TIRANE, DEC 28 (ATA) - By Th Thanasi: "My visit to Turkey materialised the military cooperation between the two countries, it was as a message of the Albanian Government to cooperate with the Turkish state," Albanian Defence Minister Sabit Brokaj told ATA about his recent visit to Turkey.

    Brokaj said that "Turkey will provide material and technical assistance for the restructuring and consolidation of the Commando Brigade within the first half of this year and will help train the specialists in this brigade."

    Brokaj considered as very important the renewal of the agreement in the field of military industry.

    "With the Turkish party we agreed to rehabilitate the naval base of Pashaliman. For this base Turkey will give 5.5 million dollars. Turkey will also afford long-term qualification for specialists.

    About 50 people, militaries and members of their families will be medically treated in health centers of Turkey free of charge. kled/xh/sh/

    [02] TWO SUCCESSIVE EXPLOSIONS SHAKE GJIROKASTER

    GJIROKASTER, DEC 28 (ATA) - By H Cani: Two explosions one at 7.45 p.m. and the other at 7.52 p.m. shook Gjirokaster on Saturday in the bridge connecting Gjirokaster with the region of Lunxheri.

    All bars, shops and homes near the blast were damaged.

    The police had reached 100 meters near the spot when another explosion took place only 7 minutes after the first one, but fortunately they were not injured.

    The police commissariat forces of the district and special forces of the Interior Ministry have blocked all the roads leading to the bridge of Lunxheri and are checking all vehicles and passengers passing there. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [03] A VERY WANTED PERSON ARRESTED IN TIRANE

    TIRANE, DEC 28 (ATA) - By Th Thanasi: Tirane police arrested

    on Saturday Gazmir Durresi, 28, who was born and lived in Laknas of Tirane and was declared very wanted, Tirane police commissariat 4 report.

    Durresi is accused of wounding deliberately a military.

    He was declared wanted by the military prosecutor's office since

    TIRANE, DEC 28 (ATA) - "Advisers of Prime Minister Nano respond to calls for destabilization by Berisha," writes Zeri i Popullit under the title "Economy: No new elections," Otherwise we lose 640 million dollars by donors, inflation threatens to be three-digital, lek will become completely devaluated," the paper writes.

    "Storming of depots, action by criminal structures of Berisha," writes the paper under the title "Here is how the arms have been sold."

    The paper covers a news conference of the advisers of President Meidani in an article entitled "1998, the year of the Constitution." In its fourth page this paper carries a declaration of the spokesman of SPA, entitled "Mandate of the present government does not stem from Berisha's wills." "Deposits in banks are safe," is the title of another article in this paper.

    "100 thousand people gather in Scanderbeg square. The capital against government of smuggling, of gangs and masks," writes Rilindja Demokratike under the title "Nano, go! New polls." "Trafficking threatens to turn Albania to Colombia of Europe," writes the newspaper in its second page under the headline "A state collapsed by trafficking."

    "Magnificent rally of DP shakes socialists. Don Quizotes in SP headquarters tremble," writes the paper under the title "Declaration out of fear and spite." "Albanian countryside in complete misery," writes the paper under the title "Maize legend returnes."

    "Government continues to abuse with local authorities" is another article in this paper.

    "Servet Pellumbi decides to publish the discussion which left him definitely out of party's direction," writes Koha Jone under the title "Nano, spirit of dictate."

    "Berisha's effects" is the title of an editorial in this paper. "Albania will lack definitely not only Berisha as president but also Fadil Hasa as humorist," writes the editorial. "Nano staff before reporters on the six-month work of the executive," writes the paper in an article headlined "We do not fear polls - government."

    "It is common knowledge that Nano assumed the role of protagonist in the Albanian policy due to his opponent Sali Berisha who has played a great role in this regard," writes the newspaper under the title "Elections favour Nano." "Rally of the 'bad year'" writes the newspaper referring to yesterday's grouping "Union for Democracy" in Tirane.

    "Vlore, tranquillity disturbed," writes the Newspaper in its 10th page, and "Marathon of blasts continuing in Gjirokaster."

    "Opposition burst in Tirane," writes the newspaper Albania, under the title "It is high time for Nano to leave - Elections in spring."

    "Local government demands autonomy," is another article in this paper. The paper carries an interview with the chairman of the DP branch, Gjirokaster Gezim Basha, under the title "Gangs in Gjirokaster, offsprings of Ceka," "Anti-pyramid lightning by Nano's economic adviser," writes the paper under the title "Pashko: Pyramid-banks to close down."

    "Former Interior deputy minister demands political asylum in Germany. He claims responsibility for the events on May 28, 29," writes the newspaper Shekulli under the title "Agim Shehu: Berisha ordered me." "Local elections, test of the spring," is the title of an editorial in this paper. "Albania going to local elections, partial or complete, this is a desire confirmed by all sides," writes an editorial.

    "Only five killings in the past five months in Vlore," writes the paper in the feature "Actualities." In its economic page the paper writes "Government challenges inflation." Yesterday's news conference of the advisers of the Prime Minister is covered by the paper under the title "Government: 1998 a better year."

    "President Meidani talks with Albanian businessmen," writes Rilindja under the title "Partnership between entrepreneurship and government." "Albanians will preserve their identity," is another article in this paper. "German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel demanded once more on Saturday a special status for Kosova and called on Serbian Government and the Albanians of Kosova to start a dialogue," writes the paper in its third page.

    "European Right wing pressurizes Berisha," writes the newspaper Dita under the title "EDU invites DP in parliament." "Macabre event in Tepelene. Bodies of two victims found," writes the paper under title "Masks kill even children." "Two other explosions in Gjirokaster," writes the newspaper in its second page. "Democrats overcome fear and occupy the square for two hours," writes the paper referring to yesterday's rally of Union for Democracy" under the title "Berisha: Let's start with concerts." "Lek, a dominant position at the end of the year," writes the paper in its economic page.

    "Terrorists in court," writes Gazeta Shqiptare. "Arrest for Lazarat gang, but the court releases one of them, public order forces in a rage," writes the newspaper. "Presidency makes the balancesheet of its governing," writes the paper under the title "Meidani: DP a national asset." "Advisers of Nano tell about the bad year," writes the paper under the title "Government: Here is what we have made."

    [05] POLICEMAN KILLED IN SHIJAK

    TIRANE, DEC.28 (ATA)- By S. Spahiu, Several masked gunmen shot dead policemen Bujar Kastrati, 30, at the centre of Shijak town, Durres district centre, on Sunday by midday.

    [06] CRIMINAL KILLS THREE PEOPLE TO STEAL TURKEY

    LUSHNJE,DEC.28 (ATA)- By I. Manka, A person killed three people at a house which he broke into to steal a turkey, in Lushnje town on Saturday.

    The criminal, also charged with other crimes, killed Perparim Tahullau, 34, Petrit Kokojka, 43, and Lutfie Kokojka, 42, and injured a fourth person, right after the family members saw him. a.ke/kei/lm/k

    [07] ATTEMPT TO BREAK INTO DEFENCE MINISTRY ATELIER

    TIRANE, DEC.28 (ATA)-Armed men attempted on Sunday at about 01.30 to break into a Defence Ministry's atelier near the Agricultural University in Kamez, Tirane district, Defence Ministry spokesman says.

    One of the guards was slightly injured on his leg in a gun-battle with the armed men.

    The defence Ministry states that recently, especially during December, there have been many cases with individuals or groups attempting to break into military units. Several have been subject to accidents in mining areas.

    The ministry reports that measures have been taken to protect the army units and that any attempt to attack them will be counterpoised according to the law. a.ke/kei/lm/k
