  • [01] ALBANIAN WRECK IN OTRANTO CHANNEL ALMOST BROUGHT TO SURFACE

    TIRANE, OCT. 20 (ATA)- By L. Rumbullaku, The Albanian refugee boat, which sank in the Otranto channel on March 28 of this year following a collission with an Italian corvette, is almost winched up to the surface, according to sources of Albanian embassy in Rome.

    It is actually being held 20 metres under water not to allow its speedy oxidization, colonel Skender Dule, who is following the operation closely, told ATA by telephone.

    During the night the vessel has been moved slowly, over the five miles, to ensure that there is no damage, said Dule. This morning divers are thought to go down to estabilish the technical criteria on how the wreck will be hauled intact into the port.

    The boat hooked to a module to drag it in, will be put tomorrow morning into a cold storage along with the bodies of the victims in which a team of doctors will start identification, Dule said.

    In the meantime, the relatives of the victims and those who survived the tragefy are in Brindisi to enable the identification of the victims through personal objects.

    On the down of March 28, an Albanian craft with refugees aboard, which was sailing from Vlore to Italy, collided with the Italian navy corvette "Sibilla" and sank with the loss of 83 Albanians, mostly women and children. lm

    [02] PRODUCER GEZIM KAME, DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL THEATER

    TIRANE, OCT. 20 (ATA) - By Flora Nikolla: Recently producer Gezim Kame was appointed director of National Theater.

    Kame, with a 27 year long artistic career, is the producer of more than 35 artistic works put on stage by the National Theater cast and other troupes in the districts.

    The dramas that Kame has put on stage are part of the most renowned world and Albanian theater. He is winner of a number of national and international prizes and member of several associations of the genre of theater in the world.

    During his career he is known as actor, teacher, chief of Drama Chair in the Academy of Arts and artistic director in the National Theater.

    So far the post of the director of the National Theater was Tonin Ujka. /xheni/xh/

    [03] DURRES POLICE HALT ILLEGAL EMIGRATION

    DURR4S, OCT.20 (ATA)- By S. Gjordeni, Several citizens have failed in their attempt to flee across the Adriatic to Italy on speedboats.

    Police forces intercepted gatherings of people in the "Teuta" sector of Durres beach at around 21:00. They were preparing to board two speedy boats to leave for Italy.

    The police took 20 persons to the commissariat, who, after being questioned, were set free.

    The police failed to intercept the two boats as their owners had left immediately in the dark.

    [04] SOROS TO PROVIDE $1 MILLION FOR SCHOOL RECONSTRUCTION

    TROPOJE, OCT.20 (ATA)- By R. Hoxha, The Soros Foundation has invested one million dollars for reconstructing six schools in Tropoje district, that is, three in the Bajram Curri town and three in the Markaj, Vetoc and Bujan villages.

    "Works have begun and the ongoing rates are satisfactory, gradually resolving difficulties, the director of the district Education Department, Petrit Ponari, told ATA.

    A number of schools in this area have suffered damages also in the period of anarchy.

    The Ministry of Education has preliminary estimated that damages at all level schools are estimated at millions of dollars.

    Rehabilitation of all school premises and their equipment with school books remains emergent./k

    [05] ALBANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TAKES PART IN MINISTERIAL MEETING OF THE BLACK SEA

    TIRANE, OCT. 20 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi: Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo left Monday to take part in the ministerial meeting of the Black Sea to be held in Kiev from October 21-22, 1997.

    The growing cooperation among the countries members of the Black Sea Initiative will continue further with its transition into a regional economic organization.

    Over its stay in Kiev, Minister Milo is expected to have meetings with senior officials of Ukraine, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry says. pas/xh/k

    [06] NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONVENES

    TIRANA, OCT 20 (ATA) - The fourth Assembly of the Democratic party (DP), which starts its proceedings on Monday, reiterated the accusations against the new government considering it "Nanocreature", and the Rome conference "a complete failure".

    DP Secretary General Genc Pollo opened the assembly and the report was read by the DP leader Sali Berisha. He invited the participants to stay a minute in silence for those killed in the unrest, many of them democrats.

    The assembly analysed the reasons of their defeat in the June 29 elections.

    Former president Berisha focused on the international factors and the position of his party.

    "Italy played an important role in the policy followed in these years but the present government has cooled the relations with neighbouring Italy," Berisha said adding that "he has been and is for a political dialogue considering the promotion of relations with regional states."

    Henrico Pieneti, representative of Forza Italia speaking on behalf of party leader Silvio Berlusconi, offered his party support to the DP.

    Berisha criticized the government's stand for considering formal the ratification of Albanian-Greek borders, what was seen during the last visit of the Greek prime minister Costas Simitis in Albania.

    "Relations with the U.S. are the most important for the foreign policy to be followed now by Albania," Berisha said. vz/kei/ak/k

    [07] PARLIAMENT TO SUSPEND SESSION THE DAY OTRANTO VICTIMS BROUGHT BACK

    TIRANA, OCT 20 (ATA) - Arban Hasani: Albania's parliament decided on Monday to suspend its session on the day the corpse of the Otranto's victims will be brought back to Albania, while a group of deputies will go to attend funeral in Vlora.

    This was proposed by the head of the Socialist parliamentary group Pandeli Majko during the approval of the scheduled work for the next week.

    Majko asked that the ambassador of the Italian Republic to Tirana Marcello Spatafora be summoned to the parliament to officially convey to him the gratitude for the efforts of the Italian government.

    The Italian authorities have begun the operation to bring to the shore the Albanian ship, which collided with the Italian navy corvette Sibilla on March 28, 1997 on the insistence of the Albanian government.

    Some 120 Albanian citizens, 83 of whom were drowned, were aboard the ship, which left Vlora for Italy.

    The Albanians, who survived the tragedy and relatives of the victims have strongly insisted in having the bodies of the drowned persons and bringing the ship to the shore.

    On a separate event, the Parliament approved the proposals to pass the draft law on commission dealing with events of January-June 1997 period.

    [08] MILITARY STAFF ANALYSES POLITICAL CRISIS IN ARMY

    TIRANA, OCT 20 (ATA) - Leading staff of the Ministry of Defence and commanders of the army units analysed on Monday the political reasons, which led to total crisis sweeping Albania since March and disintegrated the Albanian army.

    Defence Minister Sabit Brokaj was attending the meeting, which presented the material and moral losses and discussed the role of the army in a real democratic society.

    "What is important is reestablishing belief in the future of Albania and its army," Prime minister Fatos Nano told the military staff.

    A spokesman for the Premier said that Nano explained in details the program of the coalition government in the field of defence.

    "Primary goal is to revive patriotism of our military personnel, who in difficult conditions and despite irresponsible orders and some times criminal from their superiors did not use the weapons against the people. This is a strong pillar on which we can establish our army according to contemporary standards and enable it to integrate in Euro Atlantic structures," Nano said.

    "Army is very important for our nation and as such it should be kept away from politics and propaganda," the premier said.

    He stressed that the restructuring of the army according to NATO model is a necessity.

    "Adopting an individual program of partnership with NATO is a good premise to realise this goal," Nano said. ake/kei/ak/k

    [09] ALBANIAN SHIPWRECK TO ARRIVE TONIGHT OR EARLY MORNING IN BRINDISI

    TIRANA, OCT 20 (ATA) - By Keida Kostreci: The Albanian shipwreck, which sank in the Otranto channel on March 28 this year after a collision with an Italian navy corvette, will be winched to the surface on Monday night or early Tuesday, Albanian ambassador to Rome said.

    "Divers have closed all the portholes of the ship and have managed to hook it up to the Performer ship, which is towing it very slowly into port of Brindisi," Pandeli Pasko, Albanian ambassador told ATA.

    The ship is being kept some meters under the sea surface.

    Albanian colonel Skender Dule is attending the recovery operation on board of the Performer.

    Giuseppe Baffa, lawyer of the relatives of the victims, said to ATA on Sunday that "the survived from the tragedy can identify them by personal things."

    The relatives of the victims living in Italy, including the survived are in Brindisi. Some 40 relatives from Albania are expected to come.

    World experts are attending the operation of winching the wreck to the shore from the Performer.

    "Winching the ship to the shore is important for Albanians from the human aspect, while for experts this operation has a great scientific value because it is the first time such a thing happens," the Albanian ambassador said on Sunday.

    Three officials of the Albanian embassy in Rome are in Brindisi.

    The Albanian ship, which left Vlora for Italy between March 27 and 28 with clandestin people on board collided with an Italian navy corvette Sibilla, which caused its sinking and loss of 83 Albanians, including women and children.

    The Albanian parliament decided on Monday after a proposal of the head of the Socialist parliamentary group Pandeli Majko to suspend sessions the day the bodies of the victims are brought to Albania while a large group of deputies will attend funerals in Vlora.

    The ATA correspondent in Vlora said also on Monday that a local commission has begun preparations for the ceremonies and funerals of the victims.

    All the spending will be covered by the state. Two memorials are expected to be built in a city cemetery and the place where the ship left Vlora, respectively.

    The Albanian Council of Ministers set up a commission on Monday to deal with the organisation of ceremonies in honour of victims of Otranto tragedy. ak/k

    [10] POLICE DETAIN FIRST BODY-GUARD OF FORMER PRESIDENT

    TIRANA, OCT 20 (ATA) - By Th. Thanasi: Tirana police detained on Monday night the first body-guard of former president Sali Berisha, police sources said to ATA.

    Izet Haxhia was on the run by the police for beating the leader of the National Unity party Idajet Beqiri on October 16.

    Haxhia had a TT pistol and a defensive grenade when he was caught by the police, the same sources said. kei/ak/k
