  • [01] DONORS' CONFERENCE WAS SERIOUS - Ngjela

TIRANA, OCT. 19 (ATA) - By A Simoni: "The conference was serious, the fact that the Europeans convene for Albania, is very important," deputy Spartak Ngjela declared Saturday in the Rinas airport, after the arrival from the Rome Conference.

"Now, it is the work of the government to carry on negotiations and to make politics," said the legalist deputy Ngjela, who was in Rome as one of the representatives of the Albanian opposition.

"I cannot speak on behalf of all opposition parties, said Ngjela on Saturday, but I think the Europeans are taking the question seriously. They accept the problems and the bad conditions created, and the crisis, they have the desire to pull us out of the crisis."

"It's the problem what we ourselves will do," continued deputy Ngjela. He added that the amount of aid will be declared in Brussel, because Nano received a political consensus on figures in Rome, now we have to consider the technical problems."

At the end, Ngjela said "I don't know whether I go to Brussels or no, in the big conference of donors on Albania." /pas/mt/k

[02] ALBANIAN SHIP, SUNK IN OTRANTO STRAIT, DETACHED FROM DEPTHS OF THE SEA

TIRANA, OCT. 19 (ATA) - By Keida Kostreci: A special remote probe of "The performer," detached successfully on Saturday evening from the depths of the sea the Albanian ship, sunk in the Otranto Strait in March 28, 1997, after a collision with an Italian navy corvette.

Albania's Ambassador in Italy, Pandeli Pasko, referring to sources from the prefecture of Brindizi, said to ATA on Sunday morning that the remote probe moored the vessel and detached it some 20 meters from the bottom of the sea.

"The bad weather has hindered further continuation of work, and the ship is expected to arrive in Brindisi by Monday evening," said Pasko.

Experts from the world went to Italy to closely follow the operation of "The performer" which will raise the sunken ship to the surface.

"While to us, the Albanians, it is important only in the human aspect, for foreign experts this operation has many scientific values, because it is the first time such an operation is realised," stressed the Albanian Ambassador.

The relatives of the victims, drowned in the Otranto Channel, will arrive in Brindisi on Sunday or Monday.

Meanwhile, the deputy prosecutor, Leonardo Leone De Castris, who is in charge of an inquiry into the tragedy, is in the ship, while a senior official of the Albanian Embassy in Rome has gone to Brindisi.

As a result of the crush of an Albanian vessel with the Italian warship "Sibilla," 83 Albanian people, mainly women and children, hoping to find a better life in Italy, lost their lives in March 28, 1997. /mt/k
