Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] PRIME MINISTER'S INTENSE AGENDA
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz yesterday went to Romania and on the same
day visited Italy to hold official meetings. Yilmaz will meet today with
his Italian counterpart, Romano Prodi. Yilmaz will be accompanied by
State Minister Cavit Kavak, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Korkmaz
Haktanir, Prime Ministry Chief Advisor, Murat Sungar, Foreign Ministry
Deputy General Director of Western European Affairs, Bozkurt Aran and the
Foreign Ministry Deputy General Director of European Union (EU) Relations.
It is expected that the two ministers will discuss Turkey's EU membership
and Italy's support for Turkey, and Turco-Greece relations including the
Cyprus problem.
Following his meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Yilmaz will
fly on to Madrid to meet with his Spanish counterpart, Jose Maria Aznar.

[02] NEW ECONOMIC PACKAGE
Today's papers concentrated on discussions of Turkish officials with
IMF representatives in Washington. Milliyet daily newspaper's front page
headline says that a "shock package is ready". State Minister Gunes Taner
is quoted as saying that the government will exert efforts to pull down
inflation to the 15 percent mark by the end of 1998. In line with
proposals by IMF officials, State Minister Taner and his staff are now
working on a one-year stabilization programme that will be submitted to
IMF on December 12. Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who is scheduled to
visit the US in the middle of December, when the final details of the
agreement will be hammered out with the IMF officials.
[03] GERMAN SUPPORT FOR NEW TAX CONTROL
The German government is lending technical support to new Turkish
Ministry of Finance measures to up-date archaic tax controls in Turkey.
The Finance Ministry is bringing in new computerized systems to control
tax payments, tax evasion and to establish new tax schedules appropriate
to the economic situation.
The new tax system has already been started in Istanbul, Ankara,
Izmir and Adana. The project will take another three years to complete.
The system will work both ways: it will be easier for tax officials to
keep track of tax payments, and tax payers will be able to benefit from a

[04] SIX TERRORISTS KILLED IN TOKAT
During clashes between security forces and a group of terrorists in
Topcam, near Tokat, six terrorists, four men and two women, were killed.
Regarding the incidents Tokat Mayor, Ayhan Cevik, said that the terrorists
were the members of the outlawed TIKKO and DHKP-C organizations. He added
that five rifles, a pump action automatic shot-gun and a number of
documents belonged to the organization were seized. /Sabah/Cumhuriyet_
[05] GEN. CEVIK BIR OFF TO WASHINGTON
Deputy Chief of General Staff Cevik Bir, will leave for Washington
today, for a three-day visit to the United States. It is reported that
General Cevik Bir will discuss such issues as the Cyprus conflict as well
as fundamentalist and extremist activities in Turkey. /All papers/
[06] DEMIRBANK OPENING A BRANCH IN ROMANIA
As part of continuing expansion policy, Turkey's Demirbank is opening
a new branch in Romania in pursuit of new investment and foreign trade
possibilities. Director for foreign operations, Ali Ayanlar, said over
the weekend that Demirbank believed that foreign trade and international
banking will continue to grow. Demirbank branches in Turkey have
increased from 36 to 71 this year, and Demirbank officials say that they
want to see the same growth abroad. /Sabah/
[07] DEVLET BAHCELI RE-ELECTED MHP LEADER
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) held its third congress within
six months. Devlet Bahceli took 671 of the votes and was chosen once more
as the leader of the party at the end of the 5th MHP Ordinary Congress.
Other candidates, Tugrul Turkes and Ramiz Ongun won 483 and 73 votes
respectively, while Sahin Gokce withdrew after the first round of voting.

[08] CENSUS ON SUNDAY
A general census will be held on Sunday, November 30. The census is
of great importance for the next general elections as well as for
determining funds to be extended to munacipalities. Citizens will not be
allowed to leave their houses on Sunday. /Hurriyet/
