Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning

[01] TANER POSITIVE ON US MEETINGS

State Minister Gunes taner, who has been in Washington, said that he was pleased with the way meetings were progressing. Taner said that he couldn't make a detailed announcement before the meetings ended. Taner added that the purpose of the meetings was not the signing of a standby agreement, but nevertheless in the event of additional and satisfactory credit, they would not disregard the possibility. /Cumhuriyet/

[02] "TURKEY IS SUITABLE FOR EU MEMBERSHIP"

Philippe Combescot, responsible for the Turkey desk of the European Union (EU) Commission, said that Turkey, from every standpoint, met the "eligibility" criteria regarding full EU membership. Combescot said that if Turkey won IMF support, the EU would extend financial support to Turkey. He added that Turkey should solve its inflation problem as soon as possible. /Milliyet/

[03] TURKISH CONSTRUCTION FIRMS IN CENTRAL ASIA

Turkish constructions companies are competing with the world's leading constructions companies in Kazakhistan. Almost 400 Turkish firms are providing services worth $ 2 billion in Kazakhistan. Turkish firms in Kazakhistan deal with tourism, construction, banking, food and trade. The Turkish Okan Holding construction company had a very large share in the construction of Kazakhistan's new capital, Akmola. /Sabah/

[04] MENZIR CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION ON BOSPHORUS

Transportation Minister Necdet Menzir has called on the international community to collaborate on resolving the dangers of maritime traffic through the Bosphorus. He said an undersea railway tunnel would be a responsible step taken not only for the sake of Turkey but also for the whole world, the Anatolia news agency reported. Menzir made his remarks in Vienna at the opening session of a Transportation and Environment regional conference, organized by the European Economic Commission with the collaboration of the United Nations. "This planned tunnel cannot be compared with any other project. The transportation of petroleum and other dangerous materials creates massive potential danger for the residents of Istanbul. Turkey must regulate maritime traffic in the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles to reduce the risks to a minimum level. Turkey is open to all offers of international cooperation to develop alternatives."

[05] TURKEY WORRIED BY HOLBROOKE'S INITIATIVES

State Minister Responsible for Cyprus and EU Affairs, Sukru Sina Gurel, said that moves by US President Bill Clinton's Special Cyprus Envoy Richard Holbrooke may have adverse effects on efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue. Foreign Ministry officials are also worried that Holbrooke's initiatives "may not lead to any positive results." /Cumhuriyet/

[06] TURKISH SUBMARINE IN SOUTHEASTERN ASIA

Turkey is trying to set itself up in the international submarine market. In a move to find Southeastern Asian partners for joint submarine production, Turkey will send the submarine "Preveze" produced in the Golcuk Shipyards under German license to attend a defense fair in Malaysia on December 2-7.

Following the visit, the Turkish submarine will participate in joint military maneuvres staged by Turkey and Pakistan. On the eve of the maneuvres, Pakistani Land Forces Commander General Cihangir karamat will pay a visit to Ankara. /Cumhuriyet/

[07] MODERNIZATION DRIVE BY TURKISH RAILROADS

The Turkish Railroad Administartion is planning to invite international bids for the purchase of 60 electrical locomotives for $250 million. The purchase will be financed with foreign credits. The locomotives should be delivered by the end of 1999. /Cumhuriyet/

    [08] PLOT AGAINST PM YILMAZ

A bomb was found in the town of Arakli, in the province of Trabzon, near the platform where Prime Minister Yilmaz was to deliver a speech. President Demirel condemned the assassination plot. According to specialists, the bomb was very simple and was probably made by fundamentalists. A thorough investigtion has been initiated. /All papers/
