TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTUESDAY, JUNE 17, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning. [01] TURKISH FLEET IN ISRAELTurkish naval vessels have collected in the Israeli port of Haifa prior to combined exercises due to start in four days time.Five Turkish naval vessels, including the frigate Fatih, are anchored in Haifa port where they were met by Israeli officials. Naval exercises will continue for a few more weeks in the framework of the Denizkurdu 97 land and sea military forces cooperation exercises./All papers/ [02] A DAYTON AGREEMENT FOR CYPRUS NEEDEDAccording to former US Special Representative to Cyprus, Nelson Ledsky, a Dayton-style agreement is also needed for Cyprus. Commenting on the situation there, and noting that he had every confidence in his successor, Richard Holbrooke, Ledsky said that it was vital that both sides should be brought together and that current efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue should be maintained./Cumhuriyet/[03] CYPRUS MISSILES ISSUERussia is determined to sell its S-300 missiles to the Greek side on the island. Despite the diplomatic flare-up when the Greek side announced its intentions to buy the missiles, both sides appear determined to go ahead with the deal. Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov has again stressed that whatever happens, missiles will be deployed by the Greek side in accord with agreements made./Cumhuriyet/[04] ISTANBUL ROCKET ATTACKRussian-made weapons figured in a rocket attack staged in Istanbul against state security department buildings in the Aksaray district. A Russian-made rocket type missile hit the building walls blowing out windows in rooms that were actually empty. No one was killed or injured in the attack./Hurriyet/[05] CEVIK BIR AT NEW YORK TIMESOne of the leading American newspapers, The New York Times, has quoted Gen. Cevik Bir as saying "Turkey would like to use NATO as a means to unite with the European Union (EU) and the Western European Union (WEU)". In the paper it was reported that Turkey was against President Bill Clinton's wish for the inclusion of the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary in NATO./Milliyet/[06] PKK CAMP IN SOUTH CYPRUSIt has been reported that the Turkish Workers' Party (PKK) had a training camp on land belonging to the Orthodox church in Greek Cyprus. According to the INAF news agency, the camp, located in the Trodos Mountains, was used for giving military training to PKK members. It was reported also that Greek officers had occasionally visited the camp and trained the terrorists. /Milliyet/Sabah_[07] NATO BLACK SEE EXERCISESIt is reported that five NATO countries, including Turkey, France, Greece, Italy and the U.S., and four former Eastern Block countries, Georgia, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine, will hold joint military exercise in the Black Sea on 22 June-5 July.The exercise will be organized within the framework of the Partnership for Peace programme./Milliyet/ [08] PKK KILL SIX SOLDIERSThe Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked a military vehicle in Bagisli province of Hakkari with rockets yesterday. In the attacked, a second-lieutenant, a sergeant and four soldiers died.During security operations in other parts of the country, three terrorists surrendered in Uludere province of Sirnak. Also seven PKK members were captured in Izmir with their false identity cards./Sabah/ [09] PKK DEMONSTRATION AT THE SUMMITDuring the openning sessions of the European Union summit in Amsterdam, almost five thousand members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) organised an anti-Turkish demonstration with the permission of the police.
