[01] D-8 ORGANIZATION OFFICIALLY SET UP IN ISTANBULThe leaders of eight Muslem nations gathered in Istanbul for a summit meeting yesterday and officially inaugurated the Developing-8 (D-8) group of Islamic countries, calling for increasing economic and political cooperation among their states. The D-8 states are Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia.The declaration signed by the leaders outlines the six principles to be followed by the D-8 countries: peace, dialogue, cooperation, justice, equality and democracy. The declaration stresses the importance of cooperation in trade, industry, communications, finance, banking and privatization. Joint business councils will be established in each country to allow the private sectors to play a pivotal role in the D-8 group./All papers/ [02] BRITISH ENVOY IN ANKARA FOR MIDEAST TALKSThe head of the Middle East Department of the British Foreign Office, John Shepherd, is paying a two-day visit Monday to Ankara to have talks with Turkish officials, reported the Anatolia news agency. Shepherd is expected to meet with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen as well General Staff officials.[03] TOURISM MINISTER RESIGNSTourism Minister Bahattin Yucel has resigned from his post. Yucel, from the DYP wing of the Refahyol government, submitted his resignation to DYP leader Tansu Ciller on Friday./All papers/[04] DEMIREL WARNS RAFSANJANIFollowing contacts at the D-8 summit yesterday, President Demirel openly conveyed to Iranian President Rafsanjani his anxiety over reports about Iranian support for the PKK terrorist organization. Demirel asked Rafsanjaný for the extradiction to Turkey of PKK terrorists in detention in Iran and stressed that "some developments could have a negative impact on bilateral relations". Rafsanjaný in turn denied claims that Iran was extending support to the PKK. /Milliyet/[05] NEO-NAZI ATTACKS AGAINST TURKS IN GERMANYEastern German youths shouting "Heil Hitler" clashed with Turkish grocers in Rostock late on Saturday. According to a police spokesman in Rostock, ten youths between the ages of 16 and 20 tried to attack Turkish shopkeepers, but the grocers fought them off leaving two of the extremists seriously injured.[06] TURKEY RECALLS ENVOY FROM LIBYAThe Turkish Foreign Ministry has decided to recall its ambassador to Libya to Ankara, over insulting remarks by Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi about Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF). The decision to recall the ambassador was reportedly taken after the military told the Foreign Ministry that it expected more firm action in the matter. The Foreign Ministry said in a written statement on Friday that the Libyan leader was becoming increasingly insulting towards Turkey./All papers/[07] HANNAY AND OYMEN MEET ON CYPRUSForeign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen on Thursday met with Britain's special envoy to Cyprus, Sir David hannay, in a two-hour seesion, reported the Anatolia news agency.At a press conference prior to the meeting, Hannay cautioned that talks scheduled for next month between the leaders of the divided island's Greek and Turkish communities were not likely to produce any quick solutions. [08] AMBASSADOR VERGAU ASSESSES SITUATION FOR TURKS IN GERMANYAssessing the situation for the Turkish population in his country, Greman Ambassador Hans-Joachim Vergau said the desired target was a harmonious togetherness in a tolerant society and within a constitutional framework. Vergau addressed a conference entitled, "the 35th Year of Turkish Migration to Germany", saying that the subject was one in which only those who are directly affected are interested in detail.Expressing optimism about the eventual success of integration of Turks into German society, Vergau said learning the German language was an essential part of the integration of Turks with German society, adding, "We want a future where we can live together in an environment of mutual understanding." Vergau said Turkey's step-by-step approach to the European Union will also be a factor which will reinforce mutual efforts. And, he said, the dynamism of Turkey's economic growth will be a realistic perspective in gradually overcoming the tension over the subject of migration./All papers/ [09] THY BEGINS ISTANBUL-MANCHESTER FLIGHTSTurkish Airlines (THY) has announced that it will commence flights between Istanbul and Manchester, England, on Sunday 15, June, reported the Anatolia news agency. The airline will leave Istanbul at 8:35 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays using Boeing-737s. The flights will arrive in Manchester at 11:00 local time.
