TURKISH PRESS REVIEWJUNE 10, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] BOSNIAN PRESIDENT SEEKS TURKISH AIDBosnian President Alia Izzetbegovic met with his Turkish counterpart Suleyman Demirel in Ankara on Monday for talks regarding the support Turkey, as a powerful NATO member, could provide to Bosnia-Herzegovina.Izzetbegovic said that they wanted the full implementation of the Dayton peace accord and the application of articles concerning the return of refugees to their own country, and trial of war criminals. Demirel said for his part that after the Dayton agreement a new era had begun and that Turkey would do its best for the preservation of peace and stability in the region and the development of Bosnia and its economy./Sabah/Hurriyet_ [02] BALKAN FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSS REGIONAL PROBLEMSA meeting of Balkan foreign ministers started on Monday in Thessalonica, Greece with the participation of seven countries: Albania, Bulgaria, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Turkey and Serbia. Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Ali Tuygan is representing Turkey.Officials gathered for the meeting are expected to discuss trans-Balkan transport, energy and telecommunications projects. They will also be discussing elections in Albania and the implementation of the Dayton Agreement. The two-day meeting also aims to ease tensions in the multi-ethnic region, which peaked with the break-up of former Yugoslavia, by establishing co-operation in information networks and promoting cross-border business investment./Milliyet/ [03] JORDAN CROWN PRINCE HASAN BIN TALLAL TO VISIT TURKEYJordan's Crown Prince Hasan Bin Tallal is to pay a working visit to Turkey on June 12, Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said at the weekly press conference on Monday. He will meet President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan./All papers/[04] PKK RAIDS TPAO FACILITYA group of terrorists from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) late Sunday near the southeastern town of Batman vandalized a social facility belonging to the state-run Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO), almost burning the building to the ground. The financial damage was estimated to be billions of Turkish Lira but neither casualties nor injuries were reported. Opeartions are underway to apprehended the terrorists involved./Sabah/[05] IRANIAN OFFICIAL IN ANKARA TO EASE TENSIONIranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alaaddin Burucerdi paid an unexpected visit to Ankara on Monday to present Iranian President Hashemi Rafsancani's special message to President Suleyman Demirel.Turkey has been concerned over allegations that Iran is backing the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), and also trying to export its fundamental radical Islamist regime to Turkey. Iran persistently denies such claims./Cumhuriyet/Sabah_ [06] TURKISH MILITARY UNIT FLIES TO US FOR JOINT MANEUVERSA Turkish military unit made up of 50 soldiers including six officers flew on Monday to the United States to participate in the Cooperative Nugget-97 military exercise from June 11 to July 4.The maneuvers will be held in Lousiana's Fort Polk Joint Military Training Center. The Cooperative Nugget maneuvers aim to strengthen military coordination among the participant countries for regional stability in the Balkans and neighbouring states. This exercise represents a first for Turkish Land Forces' overseas participation. Turkey, Canada, the United States, Belgium and Partnership for Peace member countries, including Albania, Bulgaria, Moldovia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhistan, Kyrgyzstan the Czech republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Macedonia, Georgia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine, will be in the United States for the exercise. [07] TWO TURKS SEIZED AFTER HIJACK ORDEALThe hijack of an Air Malta airliner bound for Istanbul with 81 people on board, purportedly to raise sympathy for Mehmet Ali Agca, imprisoned for an assassination attempt on the Pope in 1981, ended peacefully on Monday. Three hours after it began two Turks Ismail Beyazpinar and Nusret Akmercan, both aged 25, surrendered at Cologne airport, releasing their hostages unharmed, the police said./Hurriyet/[08] MISSILE PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR COUGAR HELICOPTERSWhile initiatives are being made to install a missile protection system in Cougar helicopters following the deaths of 11 Turkish soldiers in helicopters shot down by missiles over the last few days, a delegation from the Office of General Staff and Defence Industry Undersecretariat left Turkey yesterday to meet with representatives from helicopter producing companies in Russia, France and Italy. /Milliyet/[09] DIGITAL NATO IN ISTANBULThe Defence industry is experiencing an information revolution. NATO will explain the CALS system to industrialists today. The high-tech continous life support system will radically change the trade and defence system. Current Mediterranean CALS meetings will express the importance of the digital process to both military and civilian society. An official opening speech will be delivered by Turkish Defence Minister Turhan Tayan tomorrow. In addition to NATO representatives, industrialists from the US, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia will participate in the meetings during which a defence industry fair will be held. Meetings will end on 13 June. /Milliyet/[10] GREAT SUCCESS OF TURKISH DOCTORA Turkish doctor, Dr. Arsinur Burcoglu, has discovered a new medicine, Defibrotide DNA, effective in the struggle against AIDS. The medicine was successfully tested on three patients, and the results were discussed at a four-day symposium at Harvard University with the participation of leading specialists in the field. According to Dr.Burcoglu, this is a medicine with no side-effects. She expects it to be put on sale within a year or two. /Sabah/[11] PKK DRUG SMUGGLING NETWORK FAILSFollowing a successful operation, the Adana Security Directorate found and confiscated 240 kilograms of heroin worth more than TL one trillion. The heroin was planned to be smuggled to Europe by the PKK terrorist organization to finance the activities of the organization. PKK terrorists use drug smuggling to raise revenues for buying expensive weapons and sophisticated missile systems. Having suffered a heavy blow as a result of the cross-border operation initiated in Northern Iraq by the Turkish Armed Forces, the PKK organization is expected to intensify its drug smuggling activities in a move to recover. /Sabah/[12] MEDITERRANEAN GAMESSports representatives of Turkish youth, to whom Atatürk entrusted the Republic, laid a wreath at Atatürk's mausoleum before leaving for the the most important sports event of the year, the Mediterranean Games held in Italy.Deputy Director General of Youth and Sports, Sakir Dorukkaya, held a press conference concerning the latest preparations in the branches of athletics, boxing, equestrianism, handball, rowing, soccer, table tennis, weightlifting, and events for the handicapped. Further, transactions involving a minimum of two billion Turkish liras at home, and those with a minimum of five billion Turkish liras coming from abroad will be closely followed.
